Fox Chapel and Drew HGC pilot

So looks like they will indeed change the HGC admittance criteria. From

"Students identified would then enter the pool and will take an online assessment and complete
an open-ended, non-scored student questionnaire in February 2017. This information, along with
a students’ school assessment and report cards, will be used in the selection process."

Yes. This is my understanding as well. It is a pilot next year. Not a good sign.

Have you not been paying attention?!?! Of course they are changing it.

As far as the not a good sign post...

It looks like NO TEST AT ALL will be given initially unlike in the past. Being added to the pool with consist of in class performance and MAP performance.

After are in the pool and want to continue with the process there is a survey (currently there's also a survey) and an online assessment. The online assessment is probably the same assessment they have been using.

IN the past, there was no test to get in the pool either. It required parental application. The burden now is on the school to identify any kids potentially eligible. This is a good move. I am all for it.

Now, the question is for the kids who do participate in the test, what is this online assessment? Is the current test online? How much is the other things going to matter?

Great! finally we have some holistic factor in play. Bravo MCPS for working so diligently on increasing the number of URM in the magnet programs. It won't eliminate the inequality of MCPS right away, but is to the right direction!

I hope when Mrs. Dixon becomes the new elected MCPS BOE member in November, she will remember her promise to have students to attend schools of their choices, not to be limited by their home locations. We need stronger leaders with vision in MCPS. We need people with a big heart to truly the help the URM and to achieve equality.

No holistic factor. It's just that now the school will select who gets tested instead of the parents filling out a form to indicate they want their child tested.

They will get overcrowded and the Whitman and Churchill families will flee to private schools.

There was a test to get into the pool... Take the test and you are in the pool to be considered.

URM is such a stupid term, minorities aren't supposed to have absolute parity in a representative democracy. When we dump on the majority too much so that others can feel equal they will then be completely unprepared when the real world reminds them where they truly stand.

Wait... So your concern here is that minorities will be unprepared? Do you think getting enrichment locally is affirmative action into college or employment?

So only a school can recommend a student to be considered? Parents aren't able to do that? Just curious
