Sanford, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Palin, Ensign, Vitter

"The Republican Party will never revive itself until its sanctimonious pantheon — Sanford, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Palin, Ensign, Vitter and hypocrites yet to be exposed — stop being two-faced." That's the closing of Maureen Dowd's column (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/28/opinion/28dowd.html ) today. I'm no fan of Palin, but I don't see what hypocrisy puts her in that company. Any thoughts?

As far as I know, most of those people have had affairs behind their spouse/partner's back. Don't know about Limbaugh though and I don't remember hearing that about Palin. I really dislike Palin but I have to agree, OP, I don't see how she fits in most of those others.

1) Palin doesn't fit in.

2) Dowd missed Spitzer, the most sanctimonious preachy weasel on Earth. And even though he's a republican, he's a notoriously hated New Yorker, so Dowd (fellow NYer) loses her argument by leaving him out. PLUS he spent $80k on hookers, which in my very humble opinion, is much worse than having an affair with one other woman/peer.

2) Otherwise, Dowd is right and the Republicans are looking like a bunch of revolting, hypocritical FREAKS.

I assume that was a typo about Spitzer being a Republican. Dem all the way!

As to which is worse, I suspect the worst is what your own spouse does. I think it always appears banal and oh so common until it hits home.

Her comments are in line with statements of a large number of Republicans, namely that he should be held to the same "moral legitimacy" standard, as he put it, that he held for Bill Clinton when he voted for impeachment.

Ad hominem attacks are an indicator of intellectual weakness. Why not say something useful?

Palin is included because she contends all of her ethics charges were frivolous and therefore dismissed. This is not true. She was called-out for pressuring others to dismiss a state employee and she was called-out on expense account reports for over-charging the state.

Limbaugh's not in there for adultery, but for drug abuse. He once said he thought all drug addicts should be publicly executed, but then became addicted to prescription drugs himself. I don't see him either volunteering for punishment or retracting his statements.

On Saturday Night Live, Gilda Radner used to do a character named Emily Litella, who would give long explanations of things she had misheard. When she realized her mistake, she'd close her monologue with a terse "Never mind." Limbaugh et al, just never had the sense to to say that about their prior preachings.

PS to Litella note: Palin's press conference would have gone better if she had restricted it to a nice brief "About being governor -- Never mind!"

I miss Gilda's Emily Litella! My favorite was her long-winded diatribe about Carter's Presidential Erection and how inappropriate the news coverage was of the president's private business, etc, etc. When Chevy Chase finally corrected her to presidential e-lec-tion, she ended with a quiet, "Oh, I see... well, that's very different. Nevermind."

SNL continues to be one of my favorite shows, and I seldom run into anyone whose memories go back to the early seasons!! So, hello out there PP!!
