Why are Mormons less tolerant of hypocrisy than Southern Baptists?

Anonymous
Mormons are disgusted by Trump and Utah is no longer a slam-dunk. Yet Southern Baptists/evangelicals continue to support him and make excuses for him.

Why do Mormons walk the walk, but evangelicals such hypocrites (support Trump, high divorce rates etc.)?

I have no idea, but I've noticed this in everyday life, too. While I disagree with their religious teachings, the Mormons I know are wonderfully kind, family-oriented people. Whereas the Baptists I know are all people I have no desire to spend any time around whatsoever.

The evangelical Christians I know, and I know many, don't care what anyone does as long as they're against abortion and gay marriage. Trump could murder a person in front of God and everybody and they'd still vote for him and justify it that Hillary will appoint liberal justices.

A lot of Evangelicals are putting political power -- especially Supreme Court appointments -- above morality this year. The Mormons don't see things so crassly.

Not a Mormon but my observations are as follows:

. Mormons hold helpfulness and other kinds of nice behavior in public as values. This makes them less tolerant of bad behavior (and excellent colleagues at work).

. Their history includes much oppression at the hands of more mainstream groups. Thus, they care more about religious freedom and minority oppression than Other groups who don't share their specific history.

I was raised Southern Baptist, I am not voting for Trump, I am pro choice, and support gay marriage. SOuthern Baptists do not have a creed or set of prescribed beliefs. Ministers are teachers. I am free to come to my own conclusions based on my own study and conclusions. Personally, I think Jesus would be with me on most of these things, although I have struggled with my feelings regarding abortion in some circumstances. However, that is up to each individual to decide for themselves.

IQ

A lot of those evangelicals are being subject to Trump like behavior in their own homes (by dad, uncle, pastor, brother Duggar etc) and they're used to it?

Do you still consider yourself a Southern Baptist though? Jimmy Carter resigned from the church a few years ago because of its rigidly social conservative and anti-women views.

The southern baptists (or more acurately, southern fundamentalists) who are voting for Trump are mostly doing it for racist reasons. Not all, but a lot. Has nothing to do with morality, they are just hiding behind it.

I think the Southern Baptists (I used to be one) would disagree with you there: http://www.sbc.net/aboutus/basicbeliefs.asp

Southern Baptists have prepared a statement of generally held convictions called The Baptist Faith and Message...

Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. ... The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation... Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord. Parents are to demonstrate to their children God's pattern for marriage.

I was raised evangelical in an area with a lot of Mormons, plus have Mormon forebears, and have some thoughts, many of which have bee voiced by others:

1) Mormons have suffered oppression at the hands of the state, and therefore are much more sensitive to inflammatory language and scapegoating;

2) The tradition of "going on Mission" means that many Mormons, particularly those who rise to positions of authority in the Church, have experience living and working overseas;

3) Partially because of the missions, Mormons are a lot less white than they used to be. It's harder to hear hurtful language about folks you know and love than it is to hear hurtful language about strangers;

4) Evangelical church leaders don't really need any "book learning" or seminary training - they are just "called." This perpetuates a culture of anti-intellectualism, as the religious leaders basically have zero education in comparative religious traditions, ancient languages, Biblical history, etc.

5) You can be "forgiven" at any point in the Evangelical tradition, so these folks just convince themselves that the Donald Trump of today is nothing like the Donald Trump of yesterday, a month ago, or ten years ago. He's been "washed in the blood of the lamb" and nothing that came before matters.

Because the evangelical christian population is full of hypocrites.

+1 the ones I have met are completely committed to the community, too. Whether they are supporting other mormons or the broader community.

I wish I could find the ability to follow their beliefs, they truly seem genuine.
