Help me decide about our upcoming trip to OBX

We're supposed to head to the Outer Banks tomorrow for a vacation with a big group of friends. Weather conditions indicate we won't be in the direct path of Matthew, but there won't be any beach time until *maybe* Monday. We're leaving Tuesday.

We have a 2 year old, and I'm newly pregnant and feeling nauseated all day long.

We do this trip every year and I love it so much, but the idea of 7 hours in a car to and from, feeling like shit, to just sit inside?

But I don't want my current state of feeling like shit to stop us from going & having fun.

Wowza. 2 year old and first trimester? I'd stay home unless you want to see your friends.
I was recovering from a cold when we had to go to OBX on a preplanned prepaid weeklong rental. With a 2 year old, it really did take us 6.5 hrs to get there, and over 7 to come back.

I wouldn't. The water will be really rough and it's probably going to rain. There's always a chance that the storm tracks differently than expected. That's a really long drive for not much payoff at the end and a chance of a bad experience.

No don't go. If there is a storm surge, the road will be cut. There are a few places where the road is really close to the beach and get washed with high water.

There is zero chance I would do this. Roads are going to be jammed with people who evacuated SC and went to NC, there will still be wind and rain from the storm even if it's offshore. No way.

Send DH with the 2-year-old. You stay home and take care of yourself.

If there is mandatory evaculations you won't be able to go anyway...or least delay the trip a few days.

The ocean will be rough with a ton of rip tides and the red flags will be up so you can't go in.

Playing in the sand will be fun for the 2 year old and I bet there are a ton of great sea shells washed up.

Go if you can though. Send the 2 yr old and DH to the beach, you go to, relax, and retreat back to the beach house alone when you don't feel up to being social anymore.

There was a thread not too long ago about things to do in OBX other than the beach (aquarium, lighthouses, small child museum, mini golf, Wright Bros, etc) so those are options too.

Don't do it. There are evacuation orders for Ocracoke Island. Would not be surprised to see those evacuation orders expanded.

Even if there aren't evacuations, the weather WILL be miserable. There won't be beach time on Monday--rip tides will close the beaches. And there's always the possibility that the bridge goes out. Or worse, the storm turns and slams straight into Wilmington and up the Outer Banks.

The roads flood with a lot of rain and storm surges. You may not be able to get in/out.

Stay home. Sounds miserable.

People who evacuate SC aren't going to OBX. The drive time from OBX to Charleston for example is almost the same as drive time from DC to Charleston.

Your logic makes zero cents.

As long as you are going north of Hags Head you will be fine. The beach road will be probably be washed in the typical places MP 1-4 in kitty hawk and maybe a couple other spots in KDH and Nags Head. Go have fun.

The severity of the conditions have definitely been downgraded, and about half our group is going now. Our destination is Nags Head. I no longer think it will be dangerous to go, but still wonder about being confined indoors with a 2 year for 3 days, and also just generally feeling blah.

We're pretty resigned to staying put at this point.

There are other things to do in obx besides hunker down inside. Why can't you walk the beach or play in the sand?
The wind and rain will push out in the next 24 hrs. It's not going g to be lousy all week.

Would you rather be bored and blah at home being with the 2 yr old or go to obx with dh and friends and let 2 yr old have fun while letting dh ( and others) watch him?
