Why isn't this against the law? This group is encouraging children to bring their (overwhelmingly Christian) bibles to school on Thursday. I thought there was supposed to separation of church and state in this country. Now were going to have kids trot out their bibles to show (and imply) that other kids (say Jewish, or other religions) are wrong?
If I had school-age kids, I'd keep them home that day. (I'm Jewish.) https://focusonthefamily.webconnex.com/co-bybts2016?gclid=CKmMn_GTwc8CFcRkhgodLeMIdQ#refcd=374701&utm_source=googlesearch&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=branded&utm_campaign=bybts |
| They're bringing proseltyzing into the classroom - and of young children. Free speech has its limits when it demolishes the line between church and state. |
I am Christian, non-demoninational, and I totally and unequivocally disagree with this plan. There are Christians are fervently disagree with their interpretation on passages in the Bible, and I would be offended if they were allowed to bring a Bible to school and beat my kids over the head with it. This is proselytising. If adults want to have a VOLUNTARY Bible discussion in a designated room at work, I have no problem with that. But putting children in a situation where they are unable/incapable of espousing their views, is not only what Christ did not have in mind but a sure fire way to push children away from the very Book they are trying to encourage. I remember when I was in elementaryt Catholic school decades ago, I was taught that people would go to hell if they were divorced. I remember thinking of my best friend whose parents were divorced and worried about them for a long time. I despised the Catholic church for years until I understood the hypocrisy when I was an older teen. Children are impressionable, and the opportunity to be bullied into faith by another child is a strong possibility. This is a terrible idea. |
PP here. That should read 'there are Christians who I fervently disagree with on their interpretation of passages in the Bible...' I was thinking and typing too fast. |
| It's Jim Dobson and Focus of the Family! What else do you expect them to do? Lol. Nothing will come of it. It's undoubtedly unconstitutional. |
OP here. I'm glad you agree with me. I, as an adult, have been approached by other adults seeking to "show me Jesus" and "save me" - and even with my adult emotional reserves, I feel disrespected and annoyed. Children simply do not have the capacity to respond to this type of thing and we should be protecting them from it - not permitting me. (I'm thinking of myself as a shy child. I'd probably start to cry if something like this happened to me - and my parents would be at the next school board meeting, livid.) |
I never heard of that group. Far-right evangelicals? |
They make far right evangelicals look sane and reasonable! |
This is it in a nutshell. I can't tell you as a child how much I cried when I thought my friend's parents were going to hell because they were divorced. A strong-willed kid can reap just as much fright as a nun in full habit. |
LOL. Well, it doesn't sound like anyone is stepping up to block it - and Thursday is day after tomorrow. They are running TV commercials (they sure have money, don't they?), and it's been widely promoted. I would hope someone would collect these bibles at the entrance of the school, telling the kids they will get them back at the end of the day, and explaining that it's unconstitutional. Then the teachers can explain about separation of church and state. Let's turn this into a teachable moment! |
I am serious when I say this. If you have a kid who may be impacted, CALL THE ACLU. This is exactly the type of case they like and they love smacking Focus on the Family. |
| The other thing I noticed is they're waiting until Thursday. Clearly, they made sure it didn't conflict with the Jewish New Year. No sense having their kids bring the New Testament to school if the little Jewish kids aren't there to be told how wrong they (and by extension, their parents) are in their religious beliefs. |
Must I have a kid who will be impacted to make the complaint to the ACLU? I'm no lawyer, but I'm aware that someone must "have standing" to bring a lawsuit. Does the same apply here? If not, I'll call. |
Their parents are hopeless heathens destined to be cast into the bowels of hell. Didn't you know? |
That's nauseating. - a Christian |
