HELP! 1st Quarter Senior Grades

Anonymous
DS is a mostly A student....1-2 Bs sprinkled in...and has his sights set up a non-Ivy top school (think Tufts, Wash U). It appears that he is on track to get his first C ever, in an advanced science class, due to his being out for pneumonia. I have a breakdown on my hands as he now is convinced that no good school will take him, and if they do via ED, they'll rescind the offer when they see the C. HELP. Has anyone experienced this before? Could one so-so grade really derail what he has worked so hard for since freshman year?

No, it will not derail it. Talk to his counselor and the counselor can talk to the admissions people and tell them the situation. THe counselor can also talk with your DC. Plus, there should be a good part of the quarter left to bring it up.

School do not remind for C's- especially one and and end of year grade.

Oh, the poor kid. He must be beside himself. All that hard work and then to get sick. Concur with prior postings - get in to counselor and Senior AP. Is there no way the teacher is willing to work with him? Record it as an Incomplete with a side note explanation? OR record something as NR or exempt with the understanding he will make it up?

SO SORRY. WHAT IS SR. AP?

IS IT BETTER TO HAVE A C OR A MARK OF INCOMPLETE?

Op, are you sure the schools he's targeting ask for first quarter grades? Most schools only need to see semester grades, so he should be able to pull it up by a better performance next quarter.

If the school will see first semester grades, agree that you should ask the counselor to write an explanation. This is a standard procedure in cases like your son's per college confidential. Good luck, and hope he feels better!

GDS sent out 1st Q grades without asking and to colleges that didn't request them. So the moral of the story is flag the issue before grades come out and find out what the HS's policy is and whether your DC has a choice re whether to send that report.

Sorry ... Senior AP is Senior Academic Principal or Senior Academic Dean. Some schools have them by grade, some don't. Usually this is a function of the size of the school or public/private. I thought OP was public because of the grade question (I would have presumed closer parent contact and more coordinated effort by the school if the child was a senior at a private). And, as to whether an I or a C is better, that may be a decision best made with the counselor. I would be inclined to go with I's for all core courses with a side note since quarter grades are awfully early. Although if I'm reading a later posting correctly that choice was unfortunately made for you (if you are the GDS parent). Yikes.

Seriously? With no warning to kids or parents? That's awful! Most colleges do not ask to see 1st quarter grades.

Yeah, it surprised me. No problem for DC, as it turned out, but I'd prefer to have been asked. GDS might only have sent 1st Q grades to EA/ED/early notification schools. DC didn't have any RD apps out at that point, so I don't know if they are handled differently.

For all I know (and I'm certainly willing to believe that) GDS would have agreed not to send the report out if we had asked. But DC and I both thought the default was we don't send unless/until student or college requests. And DC's EA school did not require those grades.

How is it "with no warning" if it is SOP?

If SOP isn't announced up front. And if the school is one that treats quarter grades as progress reports and doesn't include them on transcripts. So yes, you ask them to send your transcript to a list of schools but you don't assume they'll then automatically follow up by sending non-transcript grades.
