| Just looking in the door - saw it on his desk. Small glass pipe. Unused. DS is 16 yrs old. Excellent student; active in extra curriculars. Speaks 3 languages. Very honest and outgoing and a good communicator. I am shocked. I am wondering whether he bought it because he was curious? Or what? I can't imagine. And then to leave it out? On the desk? He must know what it is - he is very bright. I am not looking forward to this: 1) I was snooping and 2) WTF ! Now i have to think about this all day. I probably won't see him til 8 p.m. ugh. |
| Alert the media: Teenager smokes marijuana |
| OP here: Welllllllll it izz against the law. And it can be very de-motivating. I mean, in many ways I feel it's healthier than a drink/cocktail. BUT there is a reason for the drinking age - children often lack the self control required to imbibe safely. |
| How was it snooping when it was left out on the desk? Ask him about it and let him know that you do not allow this in your house. I bough a drug kit and told my kids I would test them if I thought anything was going on. |
| Just take the pipe and don't mention it but keep a watchful eye in the coming weeks. At some point soon have a talk about drinking and drugging. Acknowledge that it is unrealistic to think he won't be presented with these things and will likely want to experiment. But talk it out, establish your expectations and concerns for him. |
| In his defense, it is unused. Versus still smelling from a wake and bake session before school. |
I think parents should not assume this is acceptable behavior. Teenagers do stupid things and parents are supposed to guide them to not do stupid things. We shouldn't be turning our heads. |
OP here: I think a confrontation is required. I will try to walk in his room tonight when he's there, and hopefully it will be on the desk and I can begin the discussion then. I'm not going to just take it and not talk about it -- too weird. But if it's not on his desk tonight - OMG! What then? Maybe I should take it - in case it disappears, along with the opportunity. |
| If he starts now, it will be rampant by college. You really shouldn't come down hard on him, but discuss what he was thinking and how he thinks that will turn out for him. Also, this is old, but funny; there is a taxi episode where Jim was brilliant and at HYP when his gf introduced him to pot. And, of course, he ended up as Jim. |
|
It is a shock. Similar situation a few years ago and NOTHING we did stopped it -- talks, confiscation, loss of car, etc. Very frustrating, lots of fights. DS just got better at hiding. Good news is that a few years later DS is still excellent student, good college.

I agree you need to have a talk with him. Regardless of the fact that it's pretty widely accepted nowadays, it's still illegal, and if he gets caught with the drug or drug paraphernalia he can end up with a criminal charge that may stay on his permanent record. |
| You might want to tell him that a lot of places test for drug use these days, even for summer jobs. Petsmart, for example. Better not to start with pot and such. |
| If you don't want to take it, take a picture with your phone. |
OP here - this might work. |
Bigggggg difference between trying marijuana and smoking enough to harbor paraphernalia. |
