One episode and done. Hated it. It was drawn out, everything dragged, and literally nothing happened
I don’t understand what people are raving about |
I'm late to this show, but I have to say I completely agree. I love Jennifer Coolidge, but HATE this character. She is so unbelievably self-absorbed, needy, and whiny. I get that that's how her character is written, but it is painful to watch. She never once asks Belinda about herself, just expects her (Belinda) to drop everything and come running when she needs her. Ugh. And her interactions with the man staying next door - CRINGE. I thought the Molly Shannon character was spot-on and it was nice to see her not overdo it. I love MS too, and was so glad to see her just play that role straight. Also love Connie Britton's character, even if she is completely absorbed in her work. Both she and Steve Zahn said some very true things and came across as so believable. I had no idea Steve Zahn was such a good actor. Did anyone else notice that all the "bad" people were white, and all the "good" ones were POC? I thought that was very incredibly blatant and frankly, annoying. |
Belinda broke my heart. |
Which characters on the show would you consider « good » other than maybe Belinda? |
Yeah I literally don't get this. She has.....wide set eyes. Seriously people do you not know anyone with wide set eyes? Kate Hudson comes to mind immediately. FAS?! WTF |
Wide set eyes are ugly and fishlike. But I guess some ppl also find the fish guy in Shape of Water attractive.. |
I also don’t find Kate Hudson attractive. The wide set eyes lose me completely. |
She is smoking hot. |
So it was supposed to be a social commentary on how bad rich people are but that is not what I got. I got the distinct view that the working class poor people were awful. Belinda trying to get money out of a guest for a project that in the real work has zero chance of every making money -- she is trying to steal money; the newlywed is nuts because of her insecurity and is not stable; the waiter dude who gets talked into stealing the stuff; the resort manager who is just a bad person; the friend who would steal from people that took her on a trip. The rich people seemed normal and sane. |
Yeah no doubt about this. |
I disagree with the take that it was supposed to be a commentary on how bad rich people are. I think all of the characters were pretty fleshed out and all had some distinct flaws. Many abused what power they had, rich or poor. I do not think the rich people came off as normal and sane… |
she also had no morals- kai was like" i don't steal from people" as if that is an obvious character trait, which iy should be, and she totally blows that off. This illustrates that she is a Mossbacher, that is the difference between the colonizer and their victims, the colonizers justify their act of theft as something everyone would do, as the reasonable action. I actually know domestics and most who were like kai wouldn't have gone ahead with the theft regardless of the temptation b/c they have this "i may be poor but im honest" mindset and silently judge wealthy people they serve " you might not have stolen anything but someone somewhere along the line did and that is why i serve you, i am honest and you are morally inferior and thus wealthy" People leave valuable stuff around resorts all teh time, teh staff don't steal it, its not worth it, they'll get caught. I agree that this portrayal of kai made him out as an innocent & noble savage stereotype. Its more likely someone like him is screwing a new girl every new batch of guests at the resort and he'd know that staff would come under suspicion after a theft. |
this is spot on, as a privileged BIPOC, paula's discomfort with her hosts is something most UC POC experience, especially when they are the lone wealthy POC and all the other people who look like them are staff. It gives yo a sort of vertiginous feeling of being off balance at first and then the white cultural habits begin to annoy you, and after a bit you feel like you are being used/don't belong. TBH british people aren't as annoying in this regard as white americans but i think that is b/c race is the basis of the class system here and the class system there is based on land/title (occupation) |
Connie Britton has a great line about everyone just fighting for a seat at the table of tyranny and I think this encapsulates what this show is about. The people with money or more power (white) abuse it but everyone else (mostly POC) are also just looking to get in on the money and power. They don’t have it so they can’t abuse it but they probably would, if they did. Kai’s summer fling (forgot her name, but the college daughters friend) is one of the worst characters IMO. She clings to the belief that she is better than the white family she is staying with but enjoys the luxurious vacation on their dime and, ultimately, completely screws over the man she is sleeping with. She put him in the position to take all the risk and made absolutely no effort to help when it seemed like he was in a position to get caught. She will probably continue to blame capitalism and white colonizers for what are actually her own actions. |
umm Paula was a POC and as to actual harm caused, she was the worst person. Also no-one seems to have caught on to teh fact that Jennifer Coolidge's character is going to be bankrolling teh BLM guy and get swept up in "rescuing" him as he die from his coughing disease, she just switched him for Belinda, she realized what she washing with Belinda but just moved onto another person. |
