It's a respect thing. I call any older black woman Ms. Firstname (unless they tell me otherwise) because that's how I was taught to address my elders. I'll teach my children the same. |
Not PP but is this a remnant of slavery when addressing whites and other blacks? |
| Why do many AA people cross the street really slowly? |
| Why do AAs come in to work on the weekends when most of the other workers finish their work during the workweek? |
| Why do some AAs stick their hair picks in their hair? It seems convenient but is it also used as a hair accessory or decoration? |
Ok, that makes sense. So they grew up doing it? And it's only natural they would continue it and think everyone else should do it. But, I teach my kids to call adults Mrs. Lastname, unless they're told otherwise, and I believe lots of white people do the same. However, white customer service reps don't call themselves Mrs. lastname (at least not that I remember or notice) and the only time I've ever heard a white person introduce themselves as Ms. firstname, it's been in a daycare or church care setting. |
No, not an accessory or decoration - they are just being ghetto. |
| Are you AA 22:40? |
Yes |
Is it ok if non-whites use the term 'ghetto'? |
Fine by ME as long as "black" and "ghetto" are not used interchangeably. Some may find it offensive but not in my circle. |

I am a White guy. Would it sound strange to you that I am inspired by a number of Blacks and disgusted by others? I read of Bessie Coleman, the Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen, Frederick Douglass, Jesse Owens & Nelson Mandela, to name a few. Pioneers, trail blazers & warriors who refused to be beaten down. I think of these folks and say "if they could do what they did, my life is a piece of cake".
I am disgusted by the class of Blacks who chastise other Blacks who do well in school or on the job, that they are "acting too White". BTW, that attitude is not limited to Blacks. Low class Whites have the same envy, just call it by another name, like "bookworm", etc. I used to get disgusted by a Black guy I worked with. A fine guy in many ways but if he had a flat tire, Whitey must have put a nail in the road, just for him. If he had a dirty job one day "yep, they had to give it to me, the &*()_+. . In construction, there are few clean jobs & most of us got our share of dirty jobs. Several Black foremen did not want him on their crews, as he always attempted to play the race card with them. |
Nope- because I feel the same way. |
This is not a race issue. I've worked with white people also playing the race card by saying "reverse discrimination." It says a lot about the person not necessarily their race. |
