Cell phone ban in schools

Anonymous wrote:The admin wont enforce rules but they will make up stories to fire teachers who cant have control of their rooms or learning bc schools have no rules anymore and they gotta blame somebody. Ahhh. Blame the teachers. Low paid, unsupported, easy blame teachers. And the new ones dont have any union protection. Its easy to make their lives tough when they cant protect themselves from the corrupt school system.

Again? If you'd been a competent teacher you'd still have a job. It's not like MCPS has too many!

So glad nobody is doing any of this.

“ All middle schools and high schools were invited to join the pilot and have until Sept. 2 to sign up.”

Thanks for the link.

So, they won't let kids on social media on wifi, but most kids have a data plan. I'm going to monitor my kid's data usage while at school. They know they shouldn't be on their phone so much on sm at school.

I just set downtime from start of school to lunch and again from end of lunch to end of school. Not hard at all. My kids have survived.

How do you do that? I can’t figure out how to set multiple downtime windows in one day.

“ High school students would be mandated to keep their cell phones silenced and away during classes, but can use their devices between classes and during lunch.”

That sounds the same as current MCPS policy. The issue is that the kids are NOT putting them away during class.

Then, what are teachers and admin going to do about it. Our principal is 100% of the problem as he makes rules and then is unwilling to enforce them and finds ways to justify not implementing them. They need to bring in some tuff principals and work with parents and teachers to get things under control.

I don't disagree with you that we have weak leadership at the principal level, but I would also ask why have we built a system that relies so much on the successful leadership of one individual? This is where we need to distribute power and responsibility because right now, things are either great or horrible, depending on how good your principal is.

Correct. As a parent you decide your child’s phone usage. Stop trying to parent other people’s kids as you don’t want to parent your own and would rather the school be the bad guy.

Parents give kids their phones because schools tell parents they have cell phone policies that limit or manage phone access. But the schools are lying because the policies aren't worth the paper printed on since there is no enforcement or because some teachers enforce it while others don't.

You can't ask parents to monitor phone use when they're not in the building with their kids.

You're responding to the person whose entire livelihood depends on the existence of cellphones. He/She couldn't function without them. Neither can her kids. They love to try and call their own insecurities "good parenting" vs all the other parents. It's sad and also, slightly insane.

You need to get off social media and stop being nasty. Maybe you are not close to your kids because of how nasty you treat people and they know they cannot ask for a ride or help. No worries, your kids come to people like me instead.

You need serious help. Full stop.

You are name calling and dictating what others do without realizing others have very different lives. Mcps has no pay phones. Some of us need to communicate pick up times and such. Your kids may not be inactivities but a good way to keep them off electronics is activities and sports. Try it. And, get off your phone.

Pick-up times can be communicated before or after school, when the phones are allowed. What's the problem?

Because it often chances.

Great. So text your kid about the change and they’ll see it the minute school is over. Unless you need to pick them up early, in which case you’d have to go through the main office anyway….

You are really an uninvolved parent. To pick up from HS, you have to go 30+ minutes early to get in the pick up line. So, I would have been in line 30-45 minutes before they see it. Either way, if they do it, I'll just send in an old unused phone for them to put in the pouch or how ever it is done.

The only reason to get to the HS 30+ min early is to be at the front of the car pickup line. You don’t have to be at the front. I picked up my kids from both Blair and Northwood the last three years. If I was in the middle or at the end of the line, I had them walk until they found my car.

Exactly, you do when you have to be someone else on time.

Lakelands Park has an away all day policy with consequences. So it is happening.

Just like the competent admin who cover up rape and bully teachers and then get promoted. They are wonderful examples of what to do when teachers find out that their students bully and rape other students, terminate the teachers who know about it.

So, kids will use tons of data and their parents will be surprised when suddenly the bill for their family phone plan goes up by a lot.
This gets parents involved in enforcement instead of it falling all on teachers/administrators. I like it!

A lot of people have a family plan with unlimited data. That was the cheapest deal for us so you wouldn’t know except to check the phone or your cell phone account. Some companies like T-Mobile have a parent app for extra money but it does not work great as kids can remove the vpn and it gets around the block but you know that they are using it when the vpn is off.

Parents need to stop relying on schools to parent and keep their kid safe.

So happy our HS just instituted a bell to bell no cell phone policy. It used to be up to the individual teachers. Now the school policy is no cell phones or ear buds in every class. Admin has a multi-step plan of consequences. Super happy!

Which HS? I would like to point my principal to your school as a model.

Have your kids walk a block away and pick them up there. So much easier. Not sure how you have the time to wait 30-45 minutes every day in the carpool line

Oh honey, you don't have HS kids. Its a 2 mile rule and we are almost at 2 miles but there is no bus a block away...and its not a safe walk. You are privileged to get a bus.
