BASIS DCPCSB to open two PK3-5 campuses

Anonymous
It looks like the rumors are true (except starting in PK3, and two campuses). From today on the Charter School Board website it is now up for public comment.

Interesting that it mentions PK3 and PK4 in the summary but not in the document that I can see from my quick scan.

Of note: "Most promising locations are in Ward 1 and Ward 2"

The document projects 0 PK3 and 0 PK4 in its enrollment projections.

Not two campuses immediately; campus 1 in Ward 1 or 2. States campus 2 would NOT be in either Ward 1 or 2.

The cover letter must be a mistake. K-4 only.

The DCPCSB's summary says PK3-5, but charter amendment application says K-4.

Everyone gets Mandarin instruction, starting in K. Not immersion.

NEED to know more & I'm not reading the 500 page app. Give me the deets PLEASE.

I have an older child at BASIS MS far away from my house. LOVE IT. I have a younger child at a local elementary near my house. LOVE IT.

1. Would they be at the same campus? I know they don't know which campus, but the same or 2 different ones?

2. My younger child has severe emotional needs -- does anyone have experience with how BASIS handles something like that for MS? (E.g. current school waived her tests all last year because she was having panic attacks, even though she is really smart -- tested 3 grades above grade level the year before when she was less of an emotional mess. Would basis accommodate her? She does have an IEP and an autism diagnosis.)

3. If I choose NOT to go to Basis next year (due to severe emotional needs), would it then screw us over in 5th grade eventually because current kids would have priority over siblings?

Not according to this. They would open 1 K-4 campus in either Ward 1 or 2. After ~3 years they would open a second K-4 campus anywhere but Ward 1 or 2.

Students from these 2 campuses would both go to the current, downtown building starting in 5th.

Lots of discussion in this about commitment to meeting IEPs in an inclusion model. [As a BASIS parent with a kid on an IEP for other stuff I wouldn't recommend it. I think it would be a struggle.]

3. If I choose NOT to go to Basis next year (due to severe emotional needs), would it then screw us over in 5th grade eventually because current kids would have priority over siblings?

Not addressed. I'd go to one of the interest meetings and ask.

No idea, but any rational person would agree that current students should take priority over incoming siblings.

Page 2 of the proposal has the enrollment projections.

In years 1-3 they project having 64 4th graders at one campus. That would leave 'room' for 15:17's sibling and new children to join the school in 5th.

Starting in year 4 they project a total 128 4th graders at 2 campuses and for year 5 and beyond 160 4th graders at 2 campuses.

So your sibling is probably fine for first 2-3 years. After that it would be tougher to get in at 5 IF they meet all their enrollment targets and students continue from 4th to 5th.

3224 16th Street is where DCI is now.
Ward 2 is where Weschler's auctions is - building's been on/off the market for years.

Can we vote????

3224 16th Street, NW PLEASE!!! I know that campus and love that space. I am definitely not going to some of these really far places. But 909 E Street NW is also fantastic since that's near the MS.
