Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers

I'd like to hear which Peds in particular people reccomend who go to Capitol Medical Group. I'm switching my son over to that practice soon and would love to hear what people think.
Also, what do you like and dislike in general about the practice. Thanks so much for your replies! |
We love Dr Reva Snow, also Dr Nancy Kadowitz, and have heard good things about Dr Ken Finkelstein. All three are young, and I know that at least the first two are parents. Things I love: good doctors, efficient staff, little wait time, easy parking, nurses who call you back the same day if you leave a message, the fact that you can always come in at 4 and see whoever's available if you have an urgent issue. Things I don't love: no email access to doctors, and I'm not crazy about the older doctors (Jones & Shearin), although I have no doubt that they are extremely competent.
It's Dan Finkelstein actually-he and his wife have a toddler son. I actually like all the doctors there although I am not as crazy about Dr. Roach because I don't think she's as experienced as the others. I also really like Kathy McCue the NP.
It's Dr Roche actually. She has an excellent manner with children, but I agree that she sometimes does not seem as authoritative as the others. I believe she is also a D.O., not an M.D., if that matters to you.
I second the vote for Dr. Kadowitz. I think she is so kind and gentle and has a great manner. Dr. Snow is fantastic too -- we saw her while Dr. Kadowitz was out on maternity leave. The children of a work colleague of mine sees Dr. Finkelstein and loves him too.
We love our doc there -- Maria Pearl. We've also seen Dr. Finkelstein for sick visits & he is great, too. I'm not crazy about Dr. Jones or the nurse practitioner, Kathy. I do like the other breastfeeding consultant, Holly, though.
Kadowizt is AWESOME!!!
We've used a few of them and I consider Dr. Snow the best.
We use Dr. Shearin and really like him.
We love Finkelstein and Sherrin. I think Dr. Sherrin is what I would consider an "old school" doctor, he has a lot of experience and is very reassuring. We've always found him to be sensible and to have a great rapport with our kids. Not crazy about Kadowitz- I have found her to be condescending and not great with my kids. I love the practice, but the receptionist staff is not always great, they can be rude and not very helpful.

We used Capital for a few months after my son was first born.
On a positive note, most of the doctors seem knowledgeable and care about the children. We do credit Dr. Pearl with helping our family find the right specialist to help us. She also was very patient and tried hard. On a negative note, I don't find the practice to be particularly able to handle sophisticated issues. For example, if you need to be seen consecutive days for check-ups (like monitoring breathing issues), you may get a different doctor everyday with a different opinion as to treatment. It was very frustrating. Additionally, as noted by previous posters the support staff at the front desk is terrible. The final straw that forced us to change practices was when they couldn't determine if my son received one of his vaccinations. One vaccination sheet in his file said he didn't but the doctor's notes said that he did. They recommended that he have the shot (when they figured it out 4 MONTHS later at the next checkup) even if it was a repeat. We opted out and found a more competent practice. At the new practice they are very careful about record keeping. In sum, I would recommend Capital only for children that have minimal needs for standard issues. |
We currently use Capital Medical Group and are not entirely pleased with the practice. I agree with the previous poster that it is fine for a child with minimal needs. I also agree that the receptionist staff is horrible. It is also misinformed. As an example, the staff advised my husband that we should opt out of the hepatitis B vaccine at the hospital at birth and have it administered at their office. When we went in for the first appointment, they told us no, we should have done it at the hospital. It is difficult to get an appointment, and I don't really care for switching doctors based on availability.

We've been using CMG for almost a year now, since my son was born and LOVE the practice. We haven't faced any negatives at all (and I consider myself to be quite picky about dr. practices). Our experience was quite different from a PP's. When our son was hospitalized, Kathy was the person on call. She saw him after he was discharged every day for a week. She said that we needed to tell the front desk that she said they were to work us into her schedule and they did. She also gave us her home number and told us to call her at any time if we had any questions or issues. There aren't many doctors who would do that.
We also love Drs. Jones and Finklestein. |
Kathy is actually a Nurse Practioner. The issue with scheduling seems to be with trying to see the Doctors in the practice on consecutive days.
I'm a bit surprised to see all the negative comments about the front desk staff. In my experience, they've been quite easy to deal with, and we've certainly never had trouble getting appointments. I agree that you can't always get an appointment on the day you want with the doctor of your choice, but isn't that true everywhere?
