I 've always had pretty good experience with the medical assistants. The one who drew blood for my DD's CBC and lead was spectacular. Maybe it depends on the time of day and luck of the draw.
I've been very happy with Dr. Pearl and Dr. Finklestein. I've seen Dr. Kadowitz twice and have not felt that she's condescending. Maybe she has had some off days- she has two little ones (i think both are under three). I know I certainly have my off days too ! |
I bet we were in the next cubicle, listening to your child scream. My skin started getting clammy and cold it went on for so long. My DS, who was there for a shot, could hear it too. I had a hard time looking nonchalant and saying, "hmm, I don't know" each time he asked me why someone was screaming. Finally I went into the hall and asked what was going on. The nurse said, "Are they in there with a doctor?" I said, I would assume so but the screaming has been going on for quite a while. The nurse said she would find out for me, and after a few minutes she stuck her head in the door and said with a smile, "They're getting a shot." I thought, great, just what we're here for. I asked if we could wait in the main waiting room. (The screaming was still going on.) When I got there I said to the people behind the reception desk, "I have a suggestion for you. You might not want to make a child who is waiting to get a shot listen to another child screaming in agony for five minutes about getting a shot." I was shaking. They looked stunned. When it was our turn to get the shot, a furious older nurse stormed over and asked if we were the ones who had been waiting in room number 2 (or whatever room it was). I said yes. She said angrily, "Some children just have a really hard time getting shots and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the person giving it to them." Then, as if she suddenly remembered why we were all there in the first place, she said to my son in a really sweet voice, "But it really doesn't hurt." |

The great thing about CMG is that the doctors have varying styles and personalities (but not quality-- they're good) and you can settle on one who makes your child comfortable.
My daughter, who was initially very skittish about doctors, loves Dr. Shearin and so do I. I can't say enough good things about his demeanor. He calms the kids, cheerleads for the parents, and goes that extra mile. Dr. Jones is that old-fashioned doc but I'm glad that he's there. He suggested a tonsillectomy for my daughter (when consulting with other docs), which is out of style mostly but was 100% necessary-- and life-changing-- for her. He's a great resource. Dr. Snow is sweet and kind with the little'uns, Dr. Finkelstein has a huge fan club... really all good and the hematologists and nurses are skilled too. It can be hard to get an appt but they'll squeeze you in. Three cheers for Dr. Shearin, truly. |
| Gotta chime in here - we switched into CMG when my first was 2yo after sticking too long with a DC practice that was incredibly disorganized and downright rude. In the two years since, we have come to love CMG and have had great experiences with everyone - a wide range of the doctors as well as the LPN and front office staff. No long waits, no attitude, careful medical care, and considerate and respectful treatment --- and I say this as someone with limited patience and a husband who likes to take the kids in for every minor ailment. Maybe we've just been lucky, but after living with a horrendous practice for too long, I feel like CMG is a gem. |

We have been with CMG for 2+ years and like it very much. Our ped gave us his home phone number when we had issues with our newborn; he was very kind and reassuring (endearing him to me forever!). We have seen just about all the docs at this point, and I did a big poll when we chose the practice 2 years ago, and honestly, I think it's just a matter of whose personality you mesh with. I have liked some docs more than others, but I see those same names I don't love as much listed as other families' favorites.
I will say that the two NPs/lactation consultants, Kathy and Holly, have completely different personalities/styles. If you don't click with one, see the other one. And I had a very good experience with the admin staff recently. Our preschool was misinformed about state regs and was trying to make my kiddo have an extra, unnecessary lead test. CMG pointed this out, and then when I finally got it resolved (via phone calls to the state), they were really helpful with doing paperwork at the last minute so the kiddo could start school on time. I was very polite and it was clear the snafu wasn't my fault, so maybe that helped. No practice is perfect, and surely YMMV, but CMG has been pretty great for us. |
| Does anyone else wonder if CMG is posting here? |

I like most of the doctors there, but I can't stand Dr. Jones. He is so freakish. We are a ethnic couple and he always brings it up everytime we see him. And it's not even related to health issue. It annoys the hell out of me. Before I nodded wiht a polite smile and now my husband I decided that we will become silent when goes off on a tangent. He still doesn't get it.
I think he owns the practice and we were unlucky enough to get him when there were emergencies....stay away far far away. |

Personally, I love Dr. Jones. We've learned a lot from his "tangents." I really like that we can go in for an ear infection, but then ask 20 questions about potty training and have a doctor patient enough to sit there and answer them all and also provide his insight.
I don't know what comments he's made about your ethnicity, PP, but from my experience with him, I'm sure he meant it to be helpful. He's pointed out to us that different cultures do things differently and we can learn from them. For example, he suggested that I talk to my hispanic nanny about things like when she pottied trained her children (turns out he was right, it was much earlier than we typically potty train in the US) and how she cooks veggies (DS will actually eat veggies cooked using her "ethnic" recipes). |
OT - how does she cook the veggies? Care to share?
|
| She mixes them with potatoes and makes them into pancakes. They're delicious and DS will eat pretty much any veggie (broccoli, spinach, peas, corn, green beans) cooked this way. |
| You can buy frozen Dr. Praeger broccoli pancakes and spinach pancakes. DD has always gobbled them up. |

I think he owns the practice and we were unlucky enough to get him when there were emergencies....stay away far far away. I didn't want to go into the details about Dr. Jones said but since you asked: Each and everytime we see him he reminds us that we are ethnic. I already know that. He always asks what does my "tribe " do for xyz. I am from south asia so not sure what he means by "tribe". We reminded him that we were born here and plan to raise kids based on what we are learning here and don't know answer to his question. Everytime we ask for suggestions on ear infection, fever etc. He tells us that we should follow our 'tribe people' methods. Regardless of our reaction he goes off on long winded stories about all of the ethnic couples he knows and how he is half this and half that. I personally could care less. One time we went into the clinic for an immunization shot and he went off on constipation and breastfeeding. We couldn't get in a word in edgewise. I eventually told him that I am exclusively breast feeding so not sure what he is trying to get at. He became silent, and get back to how my tribe people are so good at "breastfeeding" etc. We have other southasian friends who are patient there. We asked them about their experience with Dr. Jones and they said it was quite similar and they avoid him. My husband and I just had it with him. I caution again...stay away far away. |
| don't like this group at all, Dr. Jones is definitely 'freakish,' made totally inappropriate remarks in front of my 6 yo DD, pointing to a boo-boo and saying his wife beats him...lovely!! Called and paid the $25 once for after hours call, Dr. Kadowitz was rude, non caring and abrupt...what is the $25 for? They are impossible when I have called for a sick appointment, trying to say don't come in... all in all aside from the fact that Namrata Wheeler a great Ped is there, I am beyond disappointed with the practice and will not go back after my 3-4 tries with them.....UGH!!! It's like a factory there, say no more! |
I love CMG. We've been taking our kids there for 5.5 years. Whenever we have an issue and call in, the nurse promptly returns our call and makes sure we can get in for a visit if necessary. The docs are excellent...we've seen all of them by now, I think. We never have to wait long, the desk staff is polite and efficient...and I promise I don't work for CMG!

My son is 10 months old, and besides one visit by Kadowitz in the hospital (I didn't dislike her but didn't get warm fuzzys), we've exclusively gone to Dr. Wheeler. We absolutely love her. So practical, down to earth, kind and just downright nice to deal with.
On another note, a friend who was in the maternity ward at Sibley for like 20 years (she's a nurse) said that she liked all of those docs except Jones, who she said should probably stick to the business of running the business instead of the patient stufff (bedside manner I guess). |
