Is this a dirty little secret no one lets you in on about getting old? I only have a handful of stray gray hairs (that I seek and destroy, er pluck) but the REST of my hair is rebelling from its stick straight, fine days to more of a straight on top/ loose kink on the bottom. This leads to hair that lays nicely down to about my ears and then WHAM! It bushes out and looks ultra dry and frizzy on the ends.
I have tried a lot of products, and can't seem to replicate the blow-out that a stylist can deliver. I use an anti-aging shampoo/conditioner that does hydrate my hair better than anything else I've tried, but I still have this issue with the texture of my hair at the ends. WTH? I can't figure out why/ how a hair (the same hair!) could start out straight at the root, and turn kinky at the last 4 inches? I can flat iron, but I don't like my hair stick straight and it's almost impossible to add a soft bend to my stick straight hair once it's flat-ironed. I hate my hair at 40! |
| Don't know if I can help, but you are not alone. I had stick straight fine hair my whole life until my late 20s. Was surprised when I was growing out my short haircut to a bob that my hair had turned wavy and a bit less fine (this was before I had a child). Anyway, almost 10 years later and I'm still struggling with finding a good easy hairstyle. |
| I don't know if it's true, but I heard that hormones can change your hair. |
| My hair started to change after I had kids. It got darker, thicker, and kinkier (bushy near the ends --- but the ends aren't splitting). |
|
Why yes it is.
Glad to know it's not just me. |
| OP again. What else is in store for us? Seriously... I want to know. I know to expect wrinkles and gray hairs, menopause and lower sex drive. But the other little irritants.. what else is there that no one tells you? |
| I was thinking the same thing. I had beautiful hair that was my best feature and now after 2 kids it is my worst feature - my hair is out of control. Dry, frizzy, no curl but is big and crazy. I used to have hair like Brooke Shields coming out of the shower and now I look like one of those freaks that gets arrested and the mug shot photo. WTF?!?!?! |

I have very long hair. A few months after giving birth, the first quarter inch of hair around my face fell out. Now it is growing back and I have two hairstyles - the regular long hair and a "mane" of 1.5 inch hair all around my face. It looks insane. My hair has always been stiff and these hairs can't be made to lie flat or blend in with the rest of my hair.
Has the face framing thing happened to anyone else? Oh, and my hair is definitely darker after pregnancy. |
Well, lots and lots of chin hairs, in my case, and eyesight that is getting bad enough that I don't notice it 'til I'm seeing it in the rearview mirror in the sunshine. Also, my editing mechanism seems to be failing, and I seem to blurt out what's on my mind without caring what people think more than I used to. Not sure this is really a problem. |
| can I ask how old you are? |

I am a stylist in Bethesda, MD at Aquaticca Salon & Day Spa.
Yes, everyone's hair changes as they get older and their body goes into different stages. The health and look of your hair has so much to do with diet, (I am referring to the intake of foods) level of stress,(high for all us moms I'm sure) how often we shampoo/expose our hair to water, as well as so many other issues. Many women don't brush their hair nowadays unless they have washed it. Something simple like brushing your hair will bring all your natural oils from your scalp down to your ends. This will coat your hair with the best thing for it....your own natural oils. This is best done with a natural boar bristle brush. There are so many things we can do to have healthier, shinier hair without having to use a ton of products or tools. This is only a sampling of tips and ideas hairdressers should be passing along to their clients. Has anyone ever explained to you why tap water is bad for your hair and why you should only wash your hair when it's dirty? What I mean by that is don't shampoo or get your hair wet every day. Find a hairdresser that will answer these questions for you. A good hairdresser will always ask you about your lifestyle and what you typically do with your hair on a daily basis. Come by the salon anytime for a complimentary consultation. Sandy Vo |

The hair around my face has broken so that it is really short (maybe an inch long).
My hair person said it is hormones (I am still nursing 15 months later). And that once I stop, I should not have this problem - I sure hope so! |
Baby hairs. I don't have this problem, but I've heard hair stylists mentioning it. I also heard a celebrity talking about it; can't remember which one. |

Oh definitely baby hairs actually happens after having a baby. Remember how when you were pregnant, no hair fell out in the shower or on your hairbrush? All that hair, living non-stop for 9 months without a pause to fall out, begins to cycle through a terminal phase in stages. I remember CLUMPS of hair morning after morning when I'd wash my hair. And then those same follicles sprout a new hair at about the same time, and voila' - - fuzzy wuzzy baby hairs ALL OVER your head. I never noticed them much but my stylist would blow them down in strands of my hair as she did the blow-dry. I was shocked to see them, growing longer and longer every time.
What I'm also surprised by is that I'm having a hard time with my metabolism slowing down too. I have to eat less to maintain weight... even less if I want to lose. I've always been right around 130 and I can't shake these 4 lbs that sit around my waist. It PISSES me off! |

i have the baby hairs too. i never knew they were called that! (i'm 8 mos post-partum.) my hair's also been coming in gray since the pregnancy - didn't expect that. i don't dye my hair (yet) so i guess i'm going to have to become a lot higher-maintenance, just when i don't really have time to do ANY maintenance!
i've also suddenly gotten really bad broken veins on my thighs - never had them before, not to this degree at least. getting old is AWESOME. Lol. |
