Sports recruitment for high school

Anonymous
Our family is in the public school system but have a child, an 8th grader, with some outstanding athletic skills. How does one go about getting this child seen by coaches and recruiters from area private schools? Admission wouldn't be a problem. Child is also a scholar. Do private schools offer scholarships based on athletics if they want a certain athlete to attend?

Not usually, just helps them get it and then you would get whatever financial aid you would otherwise qualify do. If the sport is football,,the answer may be different at the powerhouse schools, which tend to be less academic.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

My Dh is on the board of a sought after private, so I respectfully disagree. Maybe it differs at less competitive schools.

Depends on the sport. There are separate basketball and football leagues designed for high-performing 8th graders. Coaches go to the games to see the talent. Some coaches also go to middle schools to recruit. Not sure what happens with lacrosse, which is a world unto itself.

However, depending on your HHI, the recruitment effort is as the PP stated who did know what they were talking about; coach interest will get you in, with some financial help, but may not necessarily pay for your entire tuition.

There are many things the board is not told.

The reason the OP will not get a response is because it is all very secretive.

Much of it is called "financial aid".

It's easy to justify FA if you make only $250K, because most people on the board of independent schools couldn't imagine living on $250K.

The "less" academic schools have less money to give away, so our experience is the opposite. Catholic schools offered less to athletes with high HHI (high being> $100k), independent schools offered more money.

My H is a coach and deals with 8th grade recruiting every year for 15 years.

NP. Agree. Tidwell isn't going to waive tuition costs for an affluent travel soccer player whose parents can pay.

The rules are absolutely different for Catholic high schools re: financial packages

St Albans, Georgetown Prep and St Johns would be the schools that would give you the best advantage for baseball.

Agree with the prior poster that St. Albans, Georgetown Prep, and St. John's are all good schools to look for with an excellent baseball tradition. St. John's is the most affordable of those three, by a lot, but I think you could well get some Financial Aid at the others. I would advise sending an email to the coach, cc'd to the athletic director, at any school you're interested in, with the message that you are looking for a strong academic school with a great baseball program. If there's things you can say about your son's sports resume, say them -- e.g., all-star teams or stats. If there's games they might be able to observe your child at, that would be great -- coaches will definitely come out and watch games of kids interested in coming to their school.

I might add Bullis to the above list -- less of a baseball tradition but interested in athletes and seems to be giving out a lot of FA money to athletic kids.

Go to camps and clinics at the schools. If your kid is good, they will be noticed.

OP, you should reach out to the schools you think your son would have interest in, schedule tours and be sure to tell admissions that your son is interested in meeting the baseball coaches.
