John Eaton renovation?

Anonymous
Now that Lafayette is basically finished and Murch's renovation finally looks like it will happen, It seems that John Easton is the only school in Ward 3 that has not been modernized. Does anyone know if a renovation is planned and when?

hahaha. Take a look at the wider city and you'll see that Eaton has to be last - or close to it - because of equity realizations.

I think the last I saw was to start in 2020 with a planning period before that and to last something ridiculous like 5 years while the kids have to go to a swing space. But then I recently hear they pushed it back again to start in 2022.

It was all in the ranking renovations document that came out earlier this year that I can't put my finger on at the moment.

If it starts in 2020 and lasts 5+ years, my second child will only spend one year actually in Eaton and my first will spend her last 2 years in the swing space.

Totally ridiculous.

Here, OP. This is the thread I was thinking of that talks about Eaton's renovation from earlier this year: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/544460.page

They're #26 on the list. Not going to happen in the next ten years.

Why? Do you think you need to be renovated just because? Obviously, it doesn't need it half as bad as other schools and givne how high OOB is there shouldn't be overcrowding issues. Totally sane and appropriate to em.

No, the part I find entirely ridiculous, is a 5 year renovation where the children will have to go to school in a swing space. Why in the world should it take 5 years?? That is a long time. And the proposed swing place is not close to the neighborhood, so I have no idea how my family would handle that commute.

I need to add, nowhere did I say I want it renovated. The part I object to is the length of time of the renovation proposed and the 5 year use of a swing space. I would personally rather have my children continue to attend the school as is than to deal with 5 years in a swing space. Is Eaton's space ideal? No. It is almost identical to the school I attended for elementary, with space carved out of every corner to make things fit and such. But a not-ideal space is far more appealing to me than figuring out how to get my children to a swing space 3 miles away when we don't have a car and commute by Metro every day which works only because we can walk to and from the school in roughly 10 minutes.

Where does it say a 5 year swing space? I think you're getting excited over something that isn't a real problem.

Typically, there's a couple of years to cover preconceptual work and design followed by a couple of years of construction. There would only be a need for swing space during the construction years.

I'm the PP above - and I do agree that five years is insane for a renovation - but I wouldn't get too worked up about that yet. Get the money for the renovation first. Though to be fair - it is part of the package. The whole process is a bureaucratic nightmare and horribly run. It bites for all of us in DCPS. Except maybe Janney and Ellington

In one of the documents (several of them do say different things...), it says that planning would start in 2021, construction would begin in 2022, and construction would finish in 2026. Ok, so 4 years in a swing space.

Who knows though, at the snail's pace DCPS moves, it will likely never happen anyway.

Ha, yourself. Where was the talk of "equity realizations" when Janney was being renovated twice' or was it three times, in 10 years? Or when Ellington is ravenously costing $200 million and climbing? Eaton is a prime example of how those who wait their turn in line, follow the rules and don't know elbow others out of the way, get screwed in the end.

The only way construction could take 5 years would be if DC goes with a totally unqualified crony 8a contractor, which, if Bowser is still mayor, could definitely happen.

PP here and yes, you understand my snark. All the unmodernized schools are being shafted by Ellington and the orgy of modernizations in W3 (to the detriment of the rest of the city).
