WWYD with 30 minutes?

What would you do if you only had 30 minutes a day to spend in the gym, with the goal being fat loss? The treadmill for the entire 30 minutes? Stair stepper?

I would do Jillian Michaels Body Revolution or Ripped in 30 at home. Weights and cardio.

Rower. If you can go for that long that is. I do it regularly and it is amazing, but not easy. Total workout.

+1. With intervals and PLEASE proper technique.

weights

Cardio can be easily done outside the gym. Wake up 20 minutes earlier and run up and down the stairs in your home instead of going into the gym and using the stair stepper. Or walk/run around your neighborhood instead of a treadmill.
Use your gym time to build muscle/strength train.

+2 Been doing this 4 times a week 30 minutes - 2 days intervals, 2 days steady row endurance. Best cardio and all body workout for 30 minutes.

Is Rowing ok if you have a bad knee?

If you have bad knees, do incline intervals on the treadmills. Alternate low/high incline (maybe 2:1 ratio) and walking at a doable pace (say, 3mph). The high incline should be very challenging for you. The low should still work you, but where you can recover.

And please do not ever hold on to the treadmill handles! Or the screen! Or any part of it. Go HANDS-FREE.

Max 30, no question.

I think the more important thing is to make sure you go every day! (or, most of them, at least.) And I mean even if you're working out at home. It will be really easy to blow off only 30 minutes.

I would come up with 3-5 different routines and alternate them. The variety will help you go every day, also.

Does the gym have a circuit? Those are about 25 minutes, strength & cardio

Hmmm. My knee doctor said never to raise the incline on the treadmill in my case. I have no cartilege and am trying to avoid "shear".

That's... weird. Do you never go up stairs? Inclines in the real world? Use ramps?
