"Access to beaches and for swimming is banned to any person wearing improper clothes that are not respectful of good morals and secularism.
"Beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are currently the target of terrorist attacks, is liable to create risks of disrupting public order." Wow. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37056742 If this is already an existing discussion, I apologize. |

Conservative Christians would find this ironic:
"Access to beaches and for swimming is banned to any person wearing improper clothes that are not respectful of good morals and secularism" That area is notorious for topless bathing. Many Americans wouldn't go topless there, and certainly, conservative Christians would find the topless, if not itty bitty bikinis not "respectful or of good morals". Many Asians also wear full covered suits. Would they be banned, too? |
| France has no shame! People cover for religious and non religious reasons. Some can't be exposed to the sun...some prefer to wear long sleeves for protection or comfort. So now, if you are not naked or wearing a bikini, you can't swim? How stupid is this law? |
| This is what you get when you run to the government for everything. To people who think socialism and liberalism is a good idea, this is what you have to look forward to. |
I think it's very odd you're making this connection. This doesn't seem to have anything to do with socialism, and more to do with France's culture and their inability to deal with people with different beliefs. |
| We have freedom of expression which most times includes clothing. The French have been trying to force people to become "french" instead of just simply waiting a few generations for people to assimilate and accepting people as they are. |
| Those of you who disagree with this, do you think it's ok to wear a bikini to a beach in a Muslim country? Would you do that? Do you think it's wrong if the host country does not allow you to wear a bikini or punishes you for not complying with their dress code? |
There are quite a few Muslim countries where it is absolutely fine to wear a bikini on the beach. Also, Western countries are not aiming to treat people the same way repressive Muslim countries do. They dictate what women should and should not wear, does that make it right? This is kindergarten stuff. And I am someone who HATES hijabs, burkas, etc., but I recognize that the more we repress people who have these beliefs, the tighter they will hold on to them. Which is basically what is happening in Europe. |
I have worn a bikini on beaches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi multiple times and it was fine; I plan to do it again this Christmas when we go back to Dubai. It would not bother me to see someone in a burkini on a beach in a Western country because I don't care what other people wear. Also, the truth is that banning burkinis is not going to result in more freedom for the women who wear them: women who dress this way tend to live in communities/households in which women aren't permitted to make those decision for themselves. So now, their men will tell them no more beach, and they will sit at home. In the European countries in which I currently live/have lived, these women come from insular communities that operate parallel to the host Western country; women in these communities would wear a burkini to the beach because their husbands and fathers would no permit them to go to the beach otherwise. Banning burkinis on French beaches solves nothing and does not get anywhere near the root of the problem. |
| Yes, exactly who is this law for? It doesn't make the beaches safer. It doesn't liberate women who wear burkinis as they will stay home. It makes the poor little French people "safe" from the discomfort of having to be around people who are different from them. Such babies. |
Yes! you could wear bikini in so many Muslim countries. PP, I don't think you know much about the outside world, and Muslims countries. Not all Muslim countries follow Islamic laws. Not all Muslim countries force their women to cover. In fact, only few countries force women to cover in public (Saudi Arabia, and Iran). Go to Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, UAE, Qatar, Lebanon, Syria.....they even have beaches for naked only. In fact in some muslim countries, even if you do something offensive to their religion they won't subject you to punishment. They allow you wear whatever you want, and eat whatever you want. French people are known to be racist. They have failed to integrate their immigrants into society. If French hates the Arab and Muslims that much why do majority of their own native French citizens retire in North Africa, and specifically Morocco? This law is a complete BS. |
their country, their laws sorry - But that's the choice you make when you travel or if you choose to move. If you think the French are racist, then don't visit. Don't move there. They're not oppressing women. They're not anti-gay. What's the big deal? |
The French are racist, and no I am not visiting Paris again, I had enough of it. I'm not going to die if I don't vacation in France. That's not the point Though. Think of the number of French citizens who can't enjoy swimming with this stupid law. Let's not even talk about tourists or immigrants here, but just the French people who follow the Muslim faith. |
France is not racist because they love gays and hate JUST THE MUSLIMS. They are not oppressing women, they are just dictating what Muslims or any non Muslim modest woman, or a any person with skin condition who chooses to cover or wear a Burkini- a swimsuit similar to surfing suit to not step foot in the beach because covering up arms and legs is considered extremist. |
| Good! |
