Cannes Bans Burkinis at the Beach

The Muslim community has kept largely silent while harbor ing some of the terrorist and this is what that behavior has gotten. Trust is a hard thing to earn, but not so hard to lose. I hope burkas and such are soon outlawed here as they represent the most repressive form of attire and I do not accept that for any woman.

Who died and made you vice president in charge of accepting or rejecting clothes for other women?

And here we all are telling the French how to run their country.

Religious women and bodies of water--be they natural or swimming pools--confuse people across the political spectrum.

how ironic the very same women who are screaming for women's freedom are the same ones encouraging the ban. You don't smell some contradictions here? It's a wetsuit with a hood. Point is women should have the right to choose what to wear.

Eurocentrically acceptable attire

The picture below is from here - http://www.breitbart.com/london/2016/08/21/italian-imam-posts-photo-nuns-beach-protest-burqini-ban/

Italian Imam Posts Photo of Nuns on Beach to Protest Burqini Ban

The Imam said that he posted the photo to “demonstrate the hypocrisy” of partisan politics that celebrates the “covered” figures of Mary and Joseph but reacts strongly against “covered” Muslim women.

Italians are a "bit more" tolerant bc up until now, they haven't survived through the horrific acts that almost paralyzed France. Should anything happen to the Vatican, however, which has been threatened by extremists, they won't be as forgiving. The North is even less forgiving, which is ironic b/c the migrants and refugees mainly hit the South and Sicily. The country has created a Council of Relations with Italian Islam to assist with assimilation and cooperation.

Bottom line is that most Italians don't have patience for any assimilation, as they are mainly Catholic and "humanist," as my cousin would say, with very strong national ties. Italy, which is relatively large when compared to its neighbors, is sill not equipped to handle mass immigration. Unemployment is a little over 12%, with youth unemployment at close to 40%.

So the quote from the iman is humorous. The covers for men were used to protect the skin from sunburn and sand. It had nothing to do with an alliance to any god. How women became the poster children of any cover is beyond me, however. The Catholics are bad, too, and I say this as ex-Catholic who attended parochial school. Nuns are expected to cover more than priests, although there are different levels of modesty.

So is there a double standard? perhaps - But just as PPs have preached about France, I'll say the same for Italy - their country, their culture, their rules. If nuns want to frolic in the water in their habits, they can. They are a very important part of Italian culture.

The irony: telling women what they can't wear to "liberate" them from patriarchy. Also, they didn't ban the wetsuit, which is pretty much exactly the same.

Ugh.

So, in Europe, it is OK to discriminate against people, many of them European-born, based on religion norms. Cool.

Apparently France thinks so.

And *legally* discriminate.

Why is it the government's business what a woman wears at the beach? There are beaches in France where women go topless and this is ok but let a woman dress modestly oh no! Cannot have that. These women are only dressing the way women did in the early 1900s.

I am no Muslim but it is none of the government's business what a woman wears at the beach so long as it is not a danger to others.

Back off, France. If a woman can choose an abortion she should be able to choose her bathing suit for crying out loud.

Wow. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37056742

If this is already an existing discussion, I apologize.

France overreacted on this one.

I can understand the public safety need to have no one's face hidden (so, outlaw the burka and the niqab in public spaces), but I see no problem with the so-called "burkini," at least in those pics making the rounds.
