Regret buying a big house?

Anonymous
Anyone here regret buying a big house? We found one with a big backyard and a nice neighborhood. Kids are toddlers now so we dont need a whole lot of space inside the home. It is 5,000 sq ft and bigger than what we need, but think maybe we will grow into it. Anyone have any regrets after they did something similar?

I honestly think between 2-3000 square feet is the perfect size home for most families. Of course ppl live in bigger and smaller but that's my personal assessment.

Nope. No regrets. As the kids age, they'll appreciate places where they can play or hang out independently. If the space makes sense, go for it.

No. I thought it was too big when we first moved in, but as the kids have grown it's really been great to have the space. We also have a lot more gatherings and more of my family come to visit (which might be a bad thing for some, but I love it).

My rule of thumb is that the number of toilets in the house should be n-1, where n is the number of people living in the house. Anything larger than that, and it's unnecessarily large and you're cleaning extra toilets. And that's not something I'll look back on fondly when reflecting upon my life.

We wanted new construction, so we didn't really have a choice. We have about 6000 sq ft. Now that we have two kids we use most of it except for the living room and a few rooms in the basement. Utilizes are cheaper than our 2000 sq dt house.

Yes. +1 to cleaning the bathrooms. We don't even need to use all of them because we bought to "grow in to" but even though we have our routines and are fine leaving spaces unfurnished and clean, guests and the kids seem to enjoy using every bathroom at least once so that it has to be cleaned. It's annoying just keeping toilet paper and clean towels in all of them. Spaces we hoped to leave empty to grow into are filling up with furniture family brings over unsolicited when they visit. I really dislike having to tend to spaces we don't use now. I wish we'd stuck it out a bit longer in a smaller place and maybe even stayed in a smaller place permanently. There are inconveniences to both choices, and nothing is perfect, but I think there's a lot of glossing over the inconveniences of having too much house. There are a million little things that are individually insignificant but can totally suck up all your time unless you have money to and want to outsource everything. Even then there's no one (that I know it) you can pay to keep and eye out for odd, occasional tasks and put things away. I like knowing what's going on in my home, so it might be different if I had a higher tolerance for chaos.

We went from 5000 to 9000, the only real difference was size of the rooms

Nope...live in a 12K sq ft custom home with elevator and love it...kids in college but love the space. Will need it for the caretakers and grandkids down the road!! Yes.,..utilities are cheaper than our previous 7Ksq ft home....

We went the other way and bought a tiny house, but in the district we wanted it was our only choice. It's definitely getting tight!

Not really regrets but I think we will not stay put when the kids leave. We have a 4500 sf house, two kids, and honestly live on just two floors of it. But it has been nice to have the extra space for visitors, parties, so no regrets now.

Why not have both!

I don't know how we'd get by without our walk-in humidor.

That much space for a min duggar sized family feels wasteful and silly to me.
