Where to spend a month in August?

Anonymous
My DH and I are trying to align our schedules to both take off next August for an extended vacation. We are brainstorming locations now for fun. We'd like to be based in one location and we maybe would take a few days trips from there. We all love water - beaches, pools, boating. And outdoor activities - hiking, etc. Ideally walking distance to at least a few things. Would love to have a pool too.

If we stick to the US we were thinking maybe Maine? But we don't know enough about Maine to know where to look. Bar Harbor? Any good lakes? What about NY state? Or VT? We generally like those areas, but don't know which specific areas/towns to research.

We might also consider somewhere international (depending on how much "off" of work we'd be). So maybe seaside Spain or Italy? Or other options?

Would appreciate ideas!

Thank you! Hadn't thought about the Pacific NW, but that could definitely work. So beautiful!

I'll be on the Oregon coast in 2 weeks and will report back to you.

As for OP, I was going to suggest Northern CA. So many national parks.

Great Lakes
Or on a smaller lake in Wisconsin or Minnesota

If you're going to Maine, bar harbor and vicinity has by far the most to do.

Adirondacks and finger lakes are both nice and have lots of hiking. The scenery in the Adirondacks is more spectacular, but there are generally more town and city amenities near the finger lakes.

Finger Lakes, New York. Skaneateles is best.

I would do mid-Coast Maine. Stay on Damriscotta Lake area. You can make day or longer trips to Portland/Kennebunk and then Acadia from there.
