How can 20 somethings in college/right out of college afford to live in 2k a month buildings in DC?

Are they getting assistance from the bank of mom & dad?

Roommates.

How many roommates can one have in a 1 bedroom? 2 bedroom? Those newer buildings were not built with space in mind.

Parents who are rich? I don't know, I lived in a dingy basement apartment with my boyfriend when I graduated college.

They make $60K or $70K, have a roommate and don't have a lot of other expenses

They are either smarter or luckier than you, OP. Probably better looking, too.

This. Plenty can do it without help.

It helps if you dnt have student loans or a car payment.

This is how I do it:

Parents pay for health insurance, phone, and cable
I split all living expenses down the middle with my boyfriend who makes double what I do

Roommate(s), no car, no retirement savings. Still leaves plenty of money for alcohol! Also helps if you graduated from a state school with manageable debt.

This. It's not too bad at all. I had a $3300 a month mortgage by the time I was 27.

Kids right out of college in my field (comp sci) make 80K+; a 2K apartment with a roommate would be easy to pull off.

Many people have 2 in a 1 bedroom, 4 in a 2 bedroom when starting out. Some make decent money and stretch their income right off the bat. Some have parents with money.
