Get EZ pass for road trip to Maine?

Anonymous
Does anyone have an EZ pass for occasional trips? Reading the FAQ it seems intended for regular replenishments and commuting. I thought it might speed up a road trip to Maine, but I don't want/need to put money on it each month. Also, we live in DC. Do we get a VA or MD pass? Anyone got any tips?

We have it for occasional trips. It's been an absolute lifesaver. It's not a big financial commitment at all, and totally worth it in terms of saving time and hassle.

I would get it.
why be restricted just because you may not use it as much as commuters use it?

You will be glad you got it once you see the lines of cars waiting to pay with cash.

As far as DC or VA, I have a MD EZpass and I have no complaints. The website is easy to use and I've had good experiences with their customer service.

Yes, we have an EZ pass that we keep in the car and only use for trips. Comes in very handy.

Get it.

It will probably save you 25 minutes.

You can get an Ez pass from any state that offers it. Check out the different prices online. Note that in some states you pay a $1 or so a month fee even if you don't use it. Do you have a friend you can borrow it from? You can add your car plate to it.

OP here. Do any of you have the EZpass flex? It says that if you don't use it within a period you have to send it back?

Yes, we use the FLEX from VA so that we can do the Lexus Lanes for free. And we don't use it all that often, so I would just order it and not worry about this any further.

They charged us a $10 fee to keep it. We got an EZ Pass specifically for our yearly drive to Maine. So worth it.

I have a regular EZ Pass from Virginia. Totally worth it. I got it years ago because I have relatives who live in Loudoun County. I have had long periods of inactivity and it's never been an issue. It saves so much time and other than a minor upfront cost for the transponder it is no extra cost, just that you pay tolls upfront by loading money onto it. It is a beautiful feeling when you see a huge line of cars at the toll booth and you get to just keep driving by.

Yes we just paid the $10 fee to keep it. We need it only here or there (family who lives by Woodbridge) but not for regular commuting. But it does come in handy for other driving trips, like across the Bay Bridge, or a random trip out the Dulles Toll Road. The $10 was a one time fee, so not a big deal to us at all.

Yes! So worthwhile. But we don't pay monthly.

Got it for an occasional trip and years after have been surprised at how much we use it (travel for kids' activities or DH's job more and more) It's a definite timesaver and convenient to not juggle cash for tolls. Mine is set to auto load when it reaches $10 so it's not a burden and the monthly cost is less than a cup of coffee. I walked into Giant and got one the day before a trip. Not worth expending energy researching!

I got my ez pass from Massachusetts b/c they don't have a monthly requirement. I only use it about once a year but it is absolutely worth it. I know you can also buy them from Giant gas stations but I don't know the restrictions on a MD one
