Coup attempt in Turkey

Anonymous
In other news of the world falling apart...

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim appeared on live television to say that members of the military had tried to overthrow the government and that they would pay a heavy price...

Turkish troops closed off two major bridges over the Bosphorus Strait. Television footage showed military tanks outside Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport. Jets flew low over Ankara, witnesses said.

The coup attempt marks a stunning attempt to seize power from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the powerful Turkish leader who has effectively ruled the country since his Islamist-leaning political party took control of the country in 2002.

The end of Erdogan? What happens next?

The military says they've succeeded in overthrowing the government. The PM says it is illegal.

Of course he would say it's illegal. Doesn't mean they haven't been successful

This isn't too promising for him.

President Recep Erdogan is reportedly on vacation in the southern Turkish resort town of Bodrum. His status is currently unknown.

Why is there a president and a prime minister? What are their functions?

CNN reported that a Turkish reporter said that he (Erdogan) had not been heard from in six days. I see another alert saying he was safely taken somewhere. What is going on?

The politics of Turkey takes place in a framework of a secular parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Turkey is the head of government, and the President of Turkey is the head of state who holds a largely ceremonial role with substantial reserve powers.

It's like Germany.

Is this a good coup or a bad coup? Why are they blocking the bridges?

Except backwards, since Turkey's president appears to have most of the power (whether he was originally supposed to or not) and no one has ever heard of Joachim Gauck.

I don't know how to feel about this news. I loathe Erdogan, but this is not a good time for Turkey to be destabilized.

PP here. Right.

My sentiments, exactly.

This is really interesting to see. I think I'm rooting for the military here, but it sounds like we don't know much yet.

Turkey regularly has military coups. Seems to be how the country is run.

The military has released a nice statement. Whether it is true and will remain true...

Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and the general security that was damaged,” the statement annonced. “All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”
