VYS Soccer - better or worse?

I re-read it. It seems like the PP is actually telling VYS that the kid was offered too high a team for the coming year. How many "train wreck crazy" parents do that? None I've ever heard of.

Maybe it shouldn't have been posted here, but if I were VYS is really a quality organization, they'll reach out to the parents from the affected teams (the ones whose kids were staying, not the departing PP) and try to figure out what VYS could have done differently.

I'm the PP who made the parenthetical comment about the rant. I feel that I'm well equipped to judge it--I actually have an email subfolder where I keep the angry soccer emails I've been copied on through the years. I had a good starter set just from having multiple kids at a variety of clubs and rec programs, but it's really impressive now since my friends know I love them and forward ones from their kids' teams. Sometimes they are drafted by the coaches instead of the parents, and I have an angry TD one or two in my collection as well. You are correct that on the face of it the VYS guy doesn't rate very high on the crazy scale, but you also have to consider the amount of time and care that went into drafting and editing that thing.

Mind you, I'm not criticizing the guy. I'm grateful for his effort. I admire passion in virtually whatever form it takes.

VYS has something like 3,000 kids and over 1,300 playing travel. What I find so interesting is that there are so few rational responses to the substance of the rant. Those who did read it (you) a) don't think the guy is necessarily wrong on the substance, and b) aren't foaming at the mouth in response.

It doesn't really matter if he is right or wrong. He was being vindictive with his post. It was based on his experience, which is hardly objective in and of itself.

There is nothing wrong with writing that to the club but sharing it WITH the club's name is unnecessary.

I find the rant to be more telling about the poster than the club.

So who are the front runners for the new technical director? Are there any?

Are there any requirements to be the technical director? Do you need an A license in that, a diploma in this, so many years doing whatever? Is it the board that selects the TD? How is the TD even selected?

Club sent email out = new technical director will not be hired. They are going with the technical director by current assistant technical director committee approach.

We are fond of committees in the Washington, DC area.

On the site, they're listing Kevin James as boys' Director of Coaching and Michel Vanderhart as girls' Director of Coaching. (And they're both terrific.)

To answer the other question -- yes, the board hires the TD. A USSF "A" license isn't usually a requirement -- Eddie Lima has an "A" license from Brazil as well as a USSF "B" license and National Youth License, and I don't think anyone would say he's underqualified. Gunney has a UEFA A license.

A quick peek at other clubs for comparison's sake:

- PWSI: Mike Cullina has USSF A and National Youth.
- Loudoun: Darryl Gee also has both.
- Alexandria: When Ryan Rich was hired, he held the USSF B and National Youth and was pursuing his USSF A. http://www.alexandria-soccer.org/home/827578.html
- Reston: Rich Shelton (oddly enough, also running for the board) has National Youth. http://www.restonsoccer.com/Default.aspx?tabid=1137264
- PAC: Sully Hamid has USSF A and UEFA B.
- Gunston: Director of Coaching Vicky Hall has USSF A and National Youth.

The U.S. Club Soccer standards say the "base standard" is USSF B, NSCAA "Advanced National" or international equivalent. The NPL standard, which is higher (and note that VYS is in NPL) is USSF A, NSCAA Premier or international equivalent. So Lima and Gunney both met the standard.

Someone said recently that VYS travel policy requires USSF B and National Youth.
