Anyone else notice that the new Bell & Evans chicken sold at Whole Foods Tenleytown smells rancid

always? I've purchased on the day it was supposed packed, two days after, and three days after with at least a week left before the use by date and when I open the vacuum sealed packed I just smell something awful. I clean the chicken with water and let it air a bit and it still smells bad. I've never experienced this with the way Whole Foods used to package their chicken.

I also noticed I'm getting a lot less chicken, more rancid smell, and more cost than with Whole Foods packaging.

Anyone else?

Yes I do think it is the new packaging. If you rinse it it isn't bad but my mom and I both noticed this.

Just get the organic chicken from Wegman's. It's a lot better, and I believe it's cheaper. I've had bad experiences with the organic chicken sold at WF. Chicken should not smell rancid.

Wait OP, is it just the one in Tenleytown? That is the store I always go to, but if I can get the old kind of packaging at Friendship Heights I will totally switch.

I agree, and I shop at the WF on River Rd. I had a discussion about it with an emplyee in the meat section, and he swore to me it is the same chicken as always was in the WF packaging, just different packaging. So I think the poster above is right about the smell coming from the packaging (rather than something off with the chicken). I hate the new packaging.

Btw, I wish I could buy Wegmans organic chicken, but those of us shopping in Tenleytown and Bethesda do not have a Wegmans nearby!

I don't shop whole foods any more after having multiple experiences buying spoiled milk and smelly fish. So, I don't have direct experience but can believe it's a problem! Whole foods is completely overrated IMO!!!!

PP, which Whole Foods has the bad fish and milk? I find this is a recurring problem at the River Road location. Just curious if it is the same one.

I'm not pregnant, but suddenly all raw fish, poultry and meet smell horrible to me. I threw out 10 lbs of shrimp that everyone else swore was fine.

The shipping cartons at Wegmans are imprinted with the Bell & Evans logo. Caveat emptor.

I refuse to buy chicken from Whole Foods in the new packaging. Vacuumed packed anything always smells and tastes of plastic. Plus, there's no telling when the chicken was fresh, even though it says when it was packaged/sealed on the label. It's all about extending the shelf life of the product, nothing to do with customer convenience as stated on the advertising sign explaining the new packaging.

If we all stop buying chicken packaged this way, Whole Foods will have to resort to the old packaging.

Bring a cooler, make the drive, stock up, and throw it in the freezer when you get home.

In many places, people go out and walk around all day trying to hunt for their meat. What's a little driving?
