Dog who isn't affectionate

Anyone else have this? I love my dog so much. He is a great companion, happy, friendly, likes fetch, etc. But, he's completely unaffectionate. He doesn't like to be pet, or snuggle. He's kind of like a cat. Occasionally he will grudgingly let me pet him, but it's rare.
Any suggestions? Or is this just his personality, and I need to deal with it? |

My dog, who was a rescue, took 7 years to warm up to me. In the years before that, he was well behaved, polite, always followed me around but did not seek out affection until he finally realized I'm going to stick around. He's 16 now, so we've had many good years together. |

If you've had the dog for a significant amount of time, it's most likely just his personality and you aren't going to change it much. Some dogs, particularly those that didn't get a lot of human interaction as puppies, just aren't comfortable with a ton of physical contact. If you've gotten the dog recently, he could change dramatically as he gets comfortable with you.
When we first got our dog, he was very standoffish and didn't seem to like us that much. Now he's that dog that follows us into the bathroom and sits on our feet when we use the toilet because he can't stand not being right next to us at all times. |

| We have one 65lb lap dog. Seriously, if we are sitting in a chair he wants to be on top of us. We adopted him at 7 months. The other one is very sweet and will hang with us but wants his own space, He does; however, roll over on his back for belly rubs frequently. We adopted him at 12 weeks. Every dog has a distinct personality. |

| Yes. Our 2 year old Goldendoodle is not very affectionate. I'm used to dogs who liked to sleep up against me or lay on my feet to be pet. Not this dog. I love her to pieces and she's a good dog, fun and sweet. But she prefers to go off on her own to sleep and if she lays on my bed, it's at the foot of the bed and even that doesn't last long. |

| One of my dogs is affectionate, but only on her terms. She has no problem snuggling with us when it's time to sleep at night, but I could go the entire day and not see her. She likes to spend her days in a quiet room all snuggled up under a blanket by herself. |

He's a three year old rescue mutt. I've had him since he was a puppy, so almost three years.

One of our rescues was like this. He had to be near us all the time, but on his terms. He did not want to be petted or cuddle or sit in our laps, but did not let us out of his sight. I think he might have been hit by his former owner.
He was a "parallel play" guy, not an interactive play guy. |
