Puberty onset

Anonymous
I didn't start puberty until almost 13, but my little 9 year-old's breasts and pubic hair are growing. I am concerned that her period is not too far away. The pediatrician says this is the lower range of normal. We have haf the talk and she had read books, but she is not ready for this, she is pretty immature for her age. I would like to hear about the experience of others and how you handled it.

My daughter is almost 11 and like your daughter started with breasts and pubic hair at 9. She too was not ready for the discussions at that age. Fast forward almost two years and she still has not started her period. She is in a better place too to discuss and is ready if it happens.

Good luck.

My pediatrician said it was 2 to 2 1/2 years from the start of breast buds etc to her period starting. DD just started showing signs of breasts, she is almost 11.

Thanks, this is a huge relief.

Our DD started puberty at 8, and her period is definitely around the corner at 10. Her development is clearly ahead of the other girls we know her age (breast size and underarm hair are way more advanced). She is okay with it, not happy but okay, but she has no idea about what managing a period will involve. For those whose daughters got their period at 10, how do they manage this? Our DD has ADHD so she is more immature for her age than most and that compounds things. I also worry because is is petite--thin AND short--will she be a midget? Would love to hear from some who have been there.

I had early puberty and had my period right before my 10th birthday - I really wasn't ready for it and just had a hard time over all... got my period on field trips, at school, seemingly without any warning and i was never prepared... always had wads of toilet paper in my underewear... and one horrible time, a wad fell out while i was on a day trip with my parents and i didn;t realize and my dad had to pick it up and dispose of it - talk about horrible...

my pediatrician had sent me to an endocrinologist, but that doctor told my parents that they were both short (they are) and that my projected adult height with the precocious puberty would be around their height, so there was no reason to delay puberty... in retrospect, i totally disagree and WISH someone had considered the social and emotional implications of having boobs and body odor and periods 2 years before most of my class did.

If my daughter heads in that direction, i would get her on hormones.

I got my period at ten. I wasn't the first kid in my class to get it, either. Has she read any books? i read one that really explained menstrual supplies and that helped. Took a while to get the hang of tampons, though.

I don't think they will consider hormones unless your kid is under age 8. Have you looked at a 3rd grade class lately? At least at our school, a significant number seem to be entering puberty, breast buds, growth spurts and all.

I heard a report just this morning that puberty is statistically coming earlier than in past generations and can start by age 7! They say it is related to obesity, but my 11 y.o. is far from overweight and is far more developed than I was at that age.

See some people are paranoid that all posts about sex/puberty are started by pedophiles looking to get their kick, but I think this is one. People very rarely call their DD "my little 9-year-old", the post is very generic and OP basically has no question, just wants to read other posters' puberty stories. Creepy as hell.

Hm. I started getting boobs at 8, no period until 13. I have big boobs, though-- maybe they needed all that time to grow. No idea.

Assuming this is not a troll, surprised a ped would say this is on the low range of normal now. On average, she'd get her period around 11-12, which AFAIK is pretty average now.

Probably also due to hormones in milk and meat.

I got mine right after I turned 11 and I was the first girl I knew to get it. It sucked but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't anywhere near the worst thing to ever happen. My mom got hers when she was 10 and she thought she was bleeding to death. At least I knew what was happening to me. I started growing breast buds in 2nd or 3rd grade but I didn't get my period until the summer between 5th and 6th grade.

Sure the post is generic. I don't want to identify my kid, even on an anonymous forum. That you would expect it is creepy as hell. Yes, I want to hear from others because my daughter's experience is very different from mine and I am not comfortable asking my kid's friends' patents. I figured on an anonymous forum people would be more open, but I would never expect information that could even remotely identify someone.

PP with DD who started puberty at 8. I appreciate hearing from those who got their periods early, but does anyone have experience with this happening to their daughter? Our DD has ADHD and her executive functioning and general maturity are on a slower developmental curve than NT kids. Apparently she is years behind in executive functioning. Has anyone helped a young daughter through this? I just think ours will be completely overwhelmed.
