| My 1st grade son was sent home for having 101.2 temp. The school nurse said he has fever. I thought anything below 102F is not serious...What's the average temp for 6 years old? Do you think he can go back to school tomorrow? |
| Yes, that is a temperature for a 1st grader. They have to be home for 24 hours w/out a temperature before they should/can go back to school. The school doesn't want other kids getting sick. |
| Are you kidding me? Your son had a fever. How could you havea a first grader and not know this? |
|
The school did the right thing. Most schools don't allow children to attend with anything 100 degrees or more. If your son has any temperature today (meaning 100 or more) he should not go to school tomorrow. He should be fever free (meaning temp is 99 or less) for 24 hours before he returns to school. |
| I am the PP -- by the way, you should still be careful if the fever is between 99 and 100. A lot of children are not totally fine for school, and he will be miserable there all day. Best is to keep him home an extra day if you are not sure his fever is really gone. |
| Yep, I don't mean to pile on...but the very fact he was sick seeming enough to go to the nurse in the first place is important, and the temp. confirms that he is battling a virus of some kind and should be home. Be happy the school called. |
| the average temp for a 6 yr old is the same temp as a 60 year old, 98.6. that is normal. anything above is a fever. 101 can make you feel like poop, Plus he may have something that others can get. be happy he is home. |
| OP here. I mistyped that. His temp was actually 100.2. not 101. 2. Huge difference. 3 hours after he came home, his temp is now down to 98. He wants to go back to school tomorrow. not sure if he should....or the school would let him... |
This post disturbs me. You don't know that 101 degrees is a fever? When you measure 101 degrees, you feel like Hell. You do. I do. Your child does. Poor guy. Let him rest and give him some Tylenol or Motrin (PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS AND FOLLOW THE PROPER DOSAGE). Get him to bed early tonight. If his fever doesn't break, call your pediatrician. If his fever DOES break (meaning that he goes down to about 98.6), he could probably still use a day at home to recover and you should still call the pediatrician to get some help understanding fevers. |
Ohhhh. 100 degrees is still a fever but if his temperature is back to normal, and he doesn't seem ill or lethargic, he's probably okay to return to school tomorrow. Just check his temperature again tonight and tomorrow morning. |
| Oh man.....we should all count our lucky stars we are not teachers. |
As an elementary school teacher myself, I say keep him home tomorrow. There are a lot of "bugs" going around now and it's certainly appreciated if sick kids are given the opportunity to stay at home and rest. If he ended up in the Health Room, it's either b/c he complained that he wasn't feeling well, or his teacher noticed that he didn't appear to be feeling well so she sent him there herself. Give him a day to rest

| Your post said that you thought anything under 102 wasn't serious, suggesting that regardless of whether he had 100.2 or 101.2, you would have thought that being under 102 was fine. Either one is a fever and you should keep him home for 24 hours after the fever subsides. That would take you well into tomorrow afternoon. He should stay home. |
| Is his temperature down on it's own, or is that after a dose of Tylenol or Motrin? Big difference. |
| If your child is not running a fever in the morning and has no other symptoms, I would send him back to school. FWIW, in my younger son's pre-K, they would not even call me unless the fever was above 101 and/or he was lethargic. The way I look at it is this. If my kids are feeling bad enough to simply lie around and watch TV, I would let them stay home. If they are feeling well enough to play with toys and run around, they would go to school even if they were running a fever the day before. I don't get the stay home for 24 hour thing at all. |
