School sent my son home for 101.2F temp

Will the school even take him back the after it sent him home with a fever? Our school and our daycare have a 24 hour rule, and I assumed all of them did.

This post and some responses make me really mad. Now I know why my DD comes home sick from school -- b/c people refuse to follow the 24 hour rule.

I'm with you PP. I know that it stinks to have to use a personal or sick day and we all have work to do but the 24 hour rule is there for a reason!!!!

I'm the PP who would send my kids back the next day if they were fine. Whenever I've called the pediatrician because of a fever and asked what I should do about activities the next day, the advice I get is that if my child feels ok, I should send him and if he is lethargic, I should keep him home.

I thought the "24 hour rule" had to do with antibiotics specifically (i.e., how long it takes not to be contagious) not every illness.

I think the 24-hour rule about no symptoms (fever, vomiting, whatever) is to make sure whatever it is is really gone and not just taking a break.

But your ped is thinking of your child's well-being. Not necessarily every one else's.

my pediatrician said give antibiotics 24 hours so child is not contagious + keep child home for 24 hours with no fever. if no fever, then send if child seems ok, keep home if he/she is lethargic.

Everyone should also remember that fevers are lower in the morning, higher at night. So if your kid wakes up with 99, that probably means it will go up to 100 during the day.

Oh, this is ridiculous. What pediatirician would tell a parent that it's ok for her kid to return to school if the kid was still contagious.

And, as to antibiotics, on the one occasion that one of my kids had strep, the ped told me that by the time it was diagnosed, the period of contagion had passed.

As a teacher and mom, our school does not allow children with fevers to come back to school the next day. You must be fever-free for 24 hours. I have had lots of parents give their children Tylenol in he morning and send their children to school only to have the fever come right back as soon as the medicine wears off. You have to be considerate of other children and teachers/staff.

You are right about one thing, though. Mu husband is a doctor. He advises that a fever under 102 is usually nothing to worry about in young children unless it persists for several days or is accompanied by some other symptoms.
