Honey Oak Floors: Dated?

Anonymous
Are honey oak floors dated? We bought an old home and the hardwoods are in great shape but they're honeyoak. I think it's hard to coordinate color palettes with such a strong colored floor. DH disagrees. He thinks they're fine and staining them in an unnecessary expense.

Do any of you have experience with staining floors? I have seen them badly stained floors in flips in DC and I would hate for that to happen in our home.

It's not trendy at the moment but I wouldn't call it dated. Honey oak is pretty classic.

Area rugs.

What would you stain them? Dark? Please don't. Light floors are classic and make everything brighter. I would refinish and put new poly on them. We just did that in one room in our 1930 house and it looks great. Goes with everything and feels light and airy and clean.

I think they look classic in an old home. If they are in good condition, leave them alone. We redid ours a darker stain and after two cats and two small kids, I wish we had redone them a lighter color. They look terrible now.

We have honey oak floors and love them because they are very classic and neutral. It doesn't have the sexiness of the new trendy floors on HGTV and that is perfectly ok.

They will only look dated if you don't update your wall colors and depends on your furnishings. Area rugs and artwork will completely change the room too.

Now if you want dated, come check out our pickled oak kitchen cabinets.

Everyone I know with dark wood floors hates them because they show every bit of dust, dirt or hair that's on the ground.

We refinished our honey colored floors when we moved in, but we did not change the color at all and I'm glad we didn't. You don't need the trendiest stuff, and some looks are classic. The rest of my house isn't exactly super trendy and perfectly up to date, so I'm not that worried about it...

What is wrong with honey oak???? This is sort of like wondering if something is wrong with a bob haircut, a grilled cheese sandwich, or a classic pump. What could possibly offend someone about honey oak?

I dislike honey oak when they're too yellow. But I do like them more than black or very dark wood floors. I think to keep honey oak floors from not looking dated or 80s, you need to have good taste in furniture and the decor needs to be updated. Tan or yellow walls with honey oak = 1980s

We found our honey oak wood floors offer a very warm feeling to the house. During a recent renovation we debate re-doing everything to a darker wood but we decided against it and even with the new modifications in the house they still look classic and inviting.

I'd stain them to a medium dark finish. We have that and love it. Cleaning lady comes every other week and they look great - one kid, no pets.

I think that cherry colored floors look dated and actually think that the espresso/dark brown wide plank floors are already looking dated. Honey oak (with just clear varnish and no stain) is classic.

The varnish might look a little yellowed with time. Refinishing them would fix that, but it is fairly expensive. I would see how they grow on you.
