So annoyed with United Airlines!

Anonymous
I have an open return ticket reservation from another country to the US for my 6y old. Her aunt is coming and will bring her to me since my daughter cannot travel alone (and I wouldn't let her anyway since it is a long flight with some layover).

Anyway, I called them to book my daughter's return flight and I wanted it to match her aunt's specific flights. I was on the phone with them for 3 hours and they kept telling me they didn't have any space available in the flight even though I saw on their website they have it. I finally gave up and bought my daughter a whole new one way ticket to the tune of $1200.00. Then of course, I had problems booking the reservation because she is a minor, so I had to lie in their website and put date of birth as 1998. Then, I called United again to correct her info and finally was able to get through.

Now I am a little annoyed with myself because after all of this, I realized if I had booked a round trip (even though my daughter won't be returning to that country anytime soon) it would be about $300.00 cheaper than the one way ticket.

I have 24hrs grace period to cancel a reservation so I might just do this if I muster the energy!

Hate, hate United!

that sucks... but definitely cancel before the 24hr expires

Also hate them. They screwed my family by changing our tickets at the last minute so we had a 6 hour layover in Texas....from like 5 to 11 pm, then arriving in DC at like 2 I the morning. We just could not do that with three little kids so ended up just buying new tickets at great expense. Probably will not fly them again for a loooooong time.

They changed our nonstop to a flight with a layover. I only found out when I logged in to change our seats a few weeks out from our flight. There was zero communication from them about the change. I called them and was livid. They ended up rebooking us for a nonstop the day before we had previously scheduled to fly.

Hate all you want but none of the other large American carriers are any better. Sounds like this entire situation isn't just United's fault.

There really are better carriers. Southwest is better, JetBlue is better, Virgin America is better. Every time a post about US airlines comes up, these are often recommended as the best.

Yes, but unfortunately, none of these airlines go anywhere internationally except the Caribbean. And locally, UA for international travel has the most direct flights.

Your not comparing apples to apples on this. All of the above airlines you list are totally different kinds of airlines with very limited service. SWA was just announced to have the worse lost baggage record last year. For major carriers we basically have United, American and Delta now. No real difference, you'll find the same complaints on all 3 of them.

We try to book flights with an airline from the country we want to visit. Last August we went to Japan for 2 weeks and our choices were United or ANA, we flew ANA. This past April we went to Paris and flew Air France. You may pay a little more but the differences in service are worth it.

When we travel within the US, we prefer JetBlue or Southwest.

Op here. Just wanted to update that I cancelled that one way ticket ($1200) and booked a round trip ticket (even though We are not using the return tickets) for $700.00!

OP, that's crazy, you already had a ticket. Cancel it and insist that they book her flight as requested, or explain to you why they can't.

Does United still have their ticket office downtown DC, around K St? Go there. They will work to straighten it out. The problem is probably the number of unaccompanied minors/children/ or babies on the flight and where they can sit.

I think delta is better.

They recently let me change to a new date for free after changing the flight time by just an hour or so.

I decided to ask, and they actually gave it to me.
