How do you become a MCPS ESOL teacher?

Anonymous
I am hoping that a career switcher program exists specifically to teach ESOL. I found the ACET program (http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/acet/acet.html), which sounds great, but does not appear to lead to a job teaching ESOL in elementary school. Anyone have insight? I myself am a proud elementary school ESOL graduate, which is why that type of teaching position is particularly appealing to me.

I did the JHU ProMAT program, but that was around 12 years ago. Are you already a certified teacher or do you need to become certified?

I still need to become certified. Was thinking of doing the ACET program (I would be switching careers, already have a doctorate).

If you're interested in teaching elementary school, then why would you get certified as a secondary teacher?

I did not see a career switcher program for elementary school. I guess that is my real question - is there a career switcher program in MCPS for elementary school? I do not want to go back to school for a master's degree.

How old are you?

About 15 years ago, I got my Master of Teaching degree from UVa, and with that, I got a certificate in Secondary English and a certificate in K-12 ESL. I had to take the Praxis to get those certificates. This was for Virginia. I'd assume you'd need something similar for MD. Can you look online or call the administration building and ask?

A quick look at the ACET program shows that they are recruiting for secondary science/math teachers as well as secondary Spanish/French teachers. By enrolling in the program you are committing to teaching in those areas.

You would have to get a MAT or a MED if you are not already a certified teacher. This is the partnership info from the MCPS page. It does not appear that there are currently any partnerships for MAT (ESOL) at this time.

You could do a traditional Master's in education or teaching and then take the ESOL Praxis. But that won't guarantee an ESOL job, and it would be pretty big and expensive risk to take.

There are current MCPS classroom teachers who are certified to teach ESOL and they are not "guaanteed" esol jobs in mcps. There are no shortcuts that I know of.

And in the past few years people who are not current ESOL teachers have not been allowed to apply for ESOL jobs, since they slashed allocations and have currently employed ESOL teachers they still have to place.

Thanks. This confirms my findings. The ACET program is over $11K, so even that is a big investment, considering that I have already spent in excess of $200K on degrees. Too bad. I was inspired by a much more straightforward and less expensive program that I recently learned of in Virginia.

PS I am in my early thirties; not sure why that matters?

I am the ESOL teacher PP. I just wanted to say that I think it's great that you would be interested in becoming an ESOL teacher after being an ESOL student yourself. I would be thrilled if a former student of mine decided they would like to become an ESOL teacher. I hope you can achieve your goal!

Curious, what is the straightforward Virginia program you mentioned? Which county or what site spells it out?
