Vacation for Thanksgiving

Anonymous
This year I'd like to skip the traditional Thanksgiving, and just take the kids and go somewhere, preferably in the US.

Any place where fall foliage would still be visible that late in November?
Other ideas?

We live in South Florida so prefer a cold weather destination for a chance of scenery.

I don't think any cold weather destinations will have any fall color then. I visited Maine columbus day weekend one year and even then I missed the peak.

What about a rural resort like Nemacolin in PA or Greenbrier in WVA?

(I was going to suggest FL until I read your last sentence! I'd love to spend Thanksgiving in FL!)

Funny, me too! I was about to suggest the Keys, which is what we did for Thanksgiving last year. It was awesome.

NYC for the parade and some Christmas shopping.

OP here. I've done NYC many times - no desire to go back. Any other suggestions?

How far do you want to go?

OP here. I'd prefer to stay in US or Canada, not enough days to go to Europe.

How about the Biltmore?

Atlanta and/or Chattanooga

Lots of hills/mountains and stuff to do

I agree that even down south the fall leaves have mostly dropped by thanksgiving. Do you prefer city breaks (Boston, Montreal) or crave something more rural (Lancaster PA, Acadia, Vermont)? How old are your kids?

If it were me, I suppose I might try Canada with the hope that travel wouldn't be so crowded & more stuff would be open since it isn't a holiday there.

I'm not sure when the last time you have been to Biltmore- but it is pretty run down.

Although we do love Asheville, in vast, that is where we are spending Thanksgiving -- but it is going to be quiet. Not sure that is what the OP is looking for.

I don't have a preference in terms of city vs. rural. Kids will be 6,5,3 and 1 but I travel with them everywhere. I was thinking of Niagara Falls, but not sure if that is the best time of year. We've never been there and would like to experience it whenever it's best time of year.

Niagara Falls is like the Jersey Shore/Gatlinburg etc. The falls are beautiful (make sure you are on the Canadian side), but the rest is a tourist trap. Niagara on the Lake (another 20 -30 minutes) is lovely though (and there are lots of wineries on the way).

I'd stay one night only in Niagara Falls (and with a few of them because the Falls at night are gorgeous and the lighting is cool) and then move on.

Not exactly what you asked, but we go to Puerta Vallarta each Thanksgiving.
