I agree that even down south the fall leaves have mostly dropped by thanksgiving. Do you prefer city breaks (Boston, Montreal) or crave something more rural (Lancaster PA, Acadia, Vermont)? How old are your kids? If it were me, I suppose I might try Canada with the hope that travel wouldn't be so crowded & more stuff would be open since it isn't a holiday there.
I don't have a preference in terms of city vs. rural. Kids will be 6,5,3 and 1 but I travel with them everywhere. I was thinking of Niagara Falls, but not sure if that is the best time of year. We've never been there and would like to experience it whenever it's best time of year.
Niagara Falls is like the Jersey Shore/Gatlinburg etc. The falls are beautiful (make sure you are on the Canadian side), but the rest is a tourist trap. Niagara on the Lake (another 20 -30 minutes) is lovely though (and there are lots of wineries on the way). I'd stay one night only in Niagara Falls (and with a few of them because the Falls at night are gorgeous and the lighting is cool) and then move on.
