How does this all work: Developmental ped diagnose and drafting first IEP

Anonymous
Hey Guys!

So- we have scheduled IEP meeting for DS. Early stages so first IEP, initial. Meeting is in the next 2 weeks.

We just met with a developmental ped and have a few diagnoses/dr recommends for PT/OT ect.

I emailed the coordinator to ask that our IEP date be moved back- to allow for the report to be read by all parties.

Is this a request I can make- or a right I need to insist on?

Do you have the report in hand?

The school won't need more than a day to read it. Just send it along and keep the meeting.

We do not have the report yet. Meeting is set for the next week, report won't be available for another 2 weeks.

You can make the request. You may be required to sign a form agreeing that the time frames specified under applicable law can be extended.

Wrightslaw.com is an excellent resource for explaining many things in the IEP process. It can be somewhat cumbersome to use,but there is a wealth of information in t here. I have found their "classes" to be helpful too as well as inexpensive ( you get a book and a cd OD the audio presentation).

The school *shouldn't* need more than a day to read something like recommendations, but that doesn't mean they won't argue they need more. More than once in DC we've provided outside evals/reports 1-2 weeks in advance and were told by the school they just simply couldn't possibly review it at the upcoming meeting. Early stages simply ignored what we provided them (some months in advance, some a few weeks) so it didn't much matter, timing wise. Just because they aren't supposed to do that doesn't mean they won't. Anyway, it'll be highly dependent on who is running the show for your kid. I'd push it back rather than expect to have a second chance to review it before school starts, though you could always wait to review it with the school at the 30 day review - but that didn't work for us, the school was even worse that Early Stages in that regard. But know that, depending on how obnoxious the person you are dealing with is, rescheduling may result in significant delay and may impact the availability of spaces for placement at particular locations if that's at all a concern. May it go more smoothly for you/may you have someone more reasonable than we did, in which case it may go much better for you.
