I'd like to rent a house/condo for one week in the Rehoboth/Bethany area. Main criteria are that it be big enough for 8 (5 adults, 3 kids), have access to a community pool (but not its own pool), and have easy access to the beach. We were thinking of Sea Colony, but a couple of friends have warned us that it's extremely crowded. Thanks.
I think that whole area gets crowded during peak season. I don't think Sea Colony is bad, but we also tend to go in June to avoid the biggest crowds. Maybe you should look in non-beachfront areas - ResortQuest has some Bethant areas that aren't so close to the beach and I suspect they are less crowded. Or look in Fenwick or Lewes - they tend to be quieter areas. But they tend not to mostly consist of individual home rentals.
Thanks. I should add we go to Rehoboth every year in August, and I find the crowds tolerable, but the way our friends described Sea Colony (really narrow beach) made it sound much less pleasant. Maybe they're just more sensitive to crowds than we are?
Sea Colony has a private beach and I always felt it was less crowded than the public areas of Rehoboth and Bethany.
Bethany West
Has anyone tried Bear Trap or Bayside? We don't golf, but the houses look nice, and they say they have shuttles to the beach.
I don't see how your friends can describe Sea Colony as a really narrow beach, unless something has changed since last August. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the boardwalk to the edge of the water! With little kids, we're usually on the beach at 9 am and back in the condo by noon for lunch and nap, so we do get to claim a good section of beach early. But I've never found it unpleasantly crowded. We go every year because it's so easy to juggle multiple ages & needs when you're all right there on the beach.

Have you thought about hitting the Outer Banks? When you consider the terrible traffic to the Eastern Shore, the drive to Duck or Corolla isn't really that much longer -- it takes us a little over 4 hours. Once you get past Springfield the drive is quite nice with only a few minutes of cluster around the Hampton Roads area. The NC beaches are so much nicer, and far less crowded. The housing options are nicer and there are far fewer Washingtonians.
I have never had a weekend or vacation in Rehoboth or Bethany that I didn't run into at least 2 people I know from home. |
I'd love to try the Outer Banks, but the rest of our family is already driving down from Massachusetts!
10:54 here - GOTCHA!! We have made the drive from DC to Cape Cod many times and it is a killer!! Bless you for not wanting to add miles to your families trip! Good luck finding a place! : ) |
New poster here (sorry to hijack) - to the PP mentioning the drive from DC to Cape Cod: how long does it take on average? We'd need to drive on a Saturday in mid-August and can't drive overnight, though we could leave early in the morning. Thank you in advance!
We were never able to make it in less than 10 hours, and it usually took closer to 12 hours. And the really bad part is that there is no place to really break up the trip and spend the night to make it more comfortable. If I remember correctly the middle point is on the Tappan Zee Bridge. So there are no real places to break for sleep until you are in Connecticut and at that point you figure "what the hell" and keep on driving. Once you get to the cape it is so worth it, but then you gotta drive home. Good luck! |
Thank you for responding. You confirm what I thought/ feared! We're planning on doing this in one go, leaving early in the morning, and hopefully getting there before sunset. Like you, we love the Cape!
OP - have you considered Jersey Beaches? It's a lot closer to the Mass group and many are about three hours away with MUCH less traffic hell than getting to/from Delaware. It took me six hours to get home from Rehoboth on Memorial Day last year.
Which areas would you recommend? Thanks.
