I just got this beautiful Dior dress (nothing formal, workable for casual Fridays at work). But even at 40 percent off, it cost about $1500.
Am I insane for thinking of keeping it? I was hoping it wouldn't fit well and then I would just return it
|
| Are you a millionaire? If so, then no, you're not insane. Otherwise, yes, you are. |
| Really depends on how much disposable income you have and what your priorities are. I wouldn't spend that much on a dress. But I would spend that on ski equipment - which probably isn't much more practical than an expensive dress. If a dress makes you happy and you can afford it then go for it. |
| I needed that reality check. No, I am not a millionaire. But yes, I do work crazy hours, make 250k+ and have no debt. I usually spend a lot on business suits - I love clothes and can justify the expense on classic Armani, Valentino, etc. But a semi-practical dress is another story...hence my doubts. |
I'd keep it if I were you. |
Let's see a picture of the dress, then I'll tell you whether I think you're insane or not.

I can't imagine spending $1500 on a dress - but I don't have the income for it either. The dress is VERY cute! I say keep it. |
You're insane. |
| 22:22 here. Wow - I love the dress. Almost better than a new pair of skis |
| Personally, I think the dress is indeed cute but definitely not worth $1500. (And I love clothes!) But that's just me, and may be a matter of taste. If you LOVE LOVE LOVE it, then go for it. If you just sort of love it, then I would return it. |
| Thanks everyone for the input! |

I love the dress, too. That looks timeless and you'll be able to wear it forever.
I make $50K, and if I saw that marked down 40% to $300 (the equivalent of your $1500 but I have debt, only mortgage though) I would jump on it. I'm like you, though and I keep the receipt and the tags on until I have the perfect occasion for it. If you ever get to do work-into-evening-cocktails/dinner, that is it. Just bring dressier shoes and jewelry with you to work and change on the way out the door. Hot. |

You can afford it. I am pretty frugal, but over the past few years I have become difficult to fit. So, when it comes to something of nice quality that I love and with classic lines that will wear for years, I have taken on the "go for it" attitude. I would much rather have a "go to" dress that I know is flattering and makes me feel good about how I look than lots of "so so" dresses.
Enjoy the dress! |
well, it's on sale so you gotta take advantage of the bargain
