I'll be going to Charleston with my husband, older parents and younger son next month and we would like to visit a plantation. We will not be renting a car so we need one that has a tour/shuttle from the historic district. I can't seem to pick. Anyone have any recommendations?
Any other recommendations would be appreciated! I've been there once before but t was for a girl trip and we just ate drank and shopped most of the time. I do know we will be going on a carriage ride (palmetto), walking around the market, doing some shopping, eating at Husk, Poogans Porch, Hominy Grill and Swig and Swine Thanks! |
| Is it too early for popcorn? |
| What are you hoping to get out of a plantation tour? |
OP here...I guess just a fun activity. Walking around some nice grounds, seeing an historic home, hearing a bit of history....I don't have a lot of expectations really just an activity we want to do for a day. |
Op the best one by far is Middleton place. Lovely restaurant there too. Magnolia is nearby but smaller, more of a garden and gift shop type of place. Boone hall is the other direction, and only worth the trip for the farmers market and pick-your-own fruit there. |

That was why I brought my kids to Auschwitz! A fun activity, we needed something to do for the day, and I heard the concessions were great. |
| Plantations are not "historic homes." They are labor camps. |

Drayton Hall is a good tour. I go for the history and architecture of the house and property.
Op, you're going to be ripped apart here for this thread. Some people believe we should just demolish our history and pretend it never happened. When you are visiting these plantations, please do remember that people were enslsved there and it's not just about the "wealthy" family that lives in the big house. |
Lived, not lives |
I actually think it is a good teaching moment to visit concentration camps. I went there as a teenager and it was very informative. I also got to see a palace my grandfather help liberate. |
Op here. Geez some of you are just nuts! It never even crossed my mind that people would go in this direction! Did I ever say I wanted to see a wealthy family's house???? Did I ever say that I wanted to ignore slavery? I'm not even a southerner! I just enjoy history and this is part of American history. I just asked about travel recommendations! You people need to chill out! |
PP here, um, you need to chill. I was just giving you the reason why people are not ok with plantations being tourist destinations. I, personally, don't agree. I think we do need to remember our history and touring plantations is one way to do that. |
Wasn't going off on you just the crazies on here! |
| Middleton Place. |
