| Which one and why'd you pick that one? |
bm, can't get much more organic than that. best for baby. portable, no need to warm up or refrigerate.
|
| Good grief. OP, we tried earth's best and our DD wouldn't drink it. Similac has been the only one she'll take. |
|
Used Earth's Best for DS. Looked at Similac organic, but at the time it had sugar in it. Don't know if it still does, but I remember looking at the label and reading "sugar." Earth's best has lactose, which is a sugar found in milk, of course. But I think the Similac has sugar from evaporated cane juice. Healthier than refined white sugar, I think, but still sugar. I'm not a nutritionist (!), so this is just my own experience, since you asked which we picked and why. I never looked at any others.
I should add, though, that when we used the Earth's best, it was the formulation BEFORE they put DHA/ARA in it, so I can't speak to what it's like now that those ingredients are in it. |
PP here. Agreed: good grief. I love these unhelpful replies punctuated with smilie faces. |
| And, FWIW, breastmilk is only as organic as the food that you eat!! Unless you eat 95% organic foods, then your breastmilk isn't organic either. |
| I know breast milk is best but I have been told/read that any chemicals you are exposed to while breastfeeding will be passed on to baby. This includes bpa's, toxins, pesticides, etc. I am not doubting that breast milk is better than formula if you can breast feed, however it is not organic nor is it 100% safe all the time. |
| Our baby HATED all of the organic formulas. I have some issues w/ Nestle so I stayed away from GoodStart and went w/ the Costco brand. I wouldn't worry TOO terribly much, dc will be one before long and you can use organic milk. |
| We use Similac's Organic. I mix it with the Similac Advance because straight Organic caused constipation. |
so not true. please look up organic and quit trying to make anything other than bm better for baby, unless mom is taking something (drugs) bm is organic and far better than anything you can buy. |
|
New poster here:
PP - given that the USDA's definition of organic is so lax and terrible, I'll grant you, breastmilk is probably "officially" organic (minus the drugs and antibiotics like you said). But "true" organic animal products (i.e. cows' milk) also involve feeding the animal organic feed, among many other criteria, so if we can all agree that humans are animals, then unless your diet is 100% organic, your breastmilk is not by definition organic. Not arguing that it isn't best for baby, just that it's not organic. |
|
I am the poster who said that bm is not organic unless the mom eats organically.
I did NOT say that bm isn't better for babies, or that it isn't more natural. I bf my own children. However, keep in mind that the OP is asking about organic FORMULA. To talk to her about why bm is better is just rude. I'm sure she is aware. Maybe she can't breastfeed. Maybe she's going back to work and can't pump enough. Maybe she's on medication. Maybe she adopted. Whatever the reasons for her questions, there is no need for the breast-is-besters to bring her down. And guess what - I hold to my original statement. If you don't eat an organic diet, the breastmilk is NOT organic. Same as cows who don't eat an organic diet. |

Aside from looking for organic formula you may want to consider the levels of BPA in the cans. I was going to switch to Earth's Best, but they have BPA in the entire can lining whereas Similac cans only have BPA in the top and bottom. See the Environmental Work Group's guide to infant formula. http://www.ewg.org/reports/infantformula Unfortunately there is no perfect solution for those of us that can't breast fed.
BTW breast milk is high in sugar that's why the formulas are high in sugar. |
| Regarding the BPA in cans of formula - is that the can's only? So it's not in the bottles of ready-to-feed? And is it all cans -regardless of powder vs concentrate vs ready-to-feed? |

Powder, they say, is better--
from this link http://www.ewg.org/node/25571 "BPA has been detected in every brand of liquid formula, but powdered formulas have not yet been tested. While most formula containers produced in the United States contain some BPA in the lining, we found significant differences in BPA leaching potential of liquid and powdered formulas. Our modeling suggests that powdered formulas are a better choice for babies..... Even if the same amount of BPA leached from coated metals in powdered and liquid formulas, babies fed powdered formula will receive less BPA than those fed liquid formula from metal cans." We used Earth's Best (powder) for 4-5 months bc the ingredients seemed better than others--lactose, not sugar derived from cane juice--and it was organic. Oh, well, nothing is perfect. Also, powdered formulas have not been yet tested, as is my understanding, so there's no info on how much leaches into the powder. You can make your choices based on the best information available at the time. Good grief--I am so tired of being alarmed! |
