I just met another grade schooler mom who's child is in 4 separate sports. I'm already maxed out with 2 sports for my 6yo. With practice and games, that's 5h+ a week already. My 4yo has interest in dance but I just can't bring myself to sign her up for any other activities until she's 4.5/5. All I imagine are endless dance recitals.
So just a poll, could you list the age/grade of your child, and number of sports or list of activities they're in? And if you or your spouse stay at home...which makes accommodating all these activities a bit more manageable. I'll start... 6yo & 4yo 2 sports: soccer/baseball FT working outside the home for both parents. |

I think 4 separate sports for 1 kid in one season is insane.
We have ... 13 yr old and 11 yr old 13 yr old does soccer and baseball (rec level, in different seasons, not at the same time) and just started golf. Last year my 13 yr old tried doing soccer and baseball at the same time and hated it so he's back to one sport a season. 11 yr old does fencing (2 days/week) Both are also in school band and 11 yr old is in girl scouts DH and I both work FT. DH WAH most of the time. |

9 yr old dd
-gymnastics (year round, 7 hours per week) -tennis lessons (1 hour per week, no matches or tournaments) -diving lessons (1.5 hours per week) 5 yr old dd -gymnastics ( 1 hour per week) -soccer (1 practice, one game per week) -swim lessons (1 hour per week) -tennis lesson (1 hour per week) They are very active girls and get bored at home. |

Rule in elementary school is: One native language One music One sport So the 11 year old has sport 3 days a week, choir one day a week (plus daily practice), native language class one day a week (plus homework). The 6 year old has sport one day a week, musical instrument 1-2 days a week depending on the week (plus daily practice), native language class one day a week (plus homework). That's quite enough to be getting one with! |
| One at a time during the school year + swimming (off and on) is my limit. My kids are not clamoring for more, though. |

8 yo:
One sport/season so right now it's lacrosse - practice twice a week, one game on the weekend. Dance once a week Music lesson once a week 5yo: One sport per season also, and right now also lacrosse. But at this age it's only practice once a week with no games Dance once a week No music yet but will probably start in the fall |

I work part-time and am available in the afternoons. One weekday activity starts at 5pm, the rest are later and Saturdays are fully booked, so a WOH parent with some flexibility (or a driver!) technically could have the same schedule. |

7 year old:

| 10 yr old DS has fencing twice a week year round. He also plays tennis once a week for an hour and a half. That is seasonal. So far, he has only done it in the spring. Religious Ed during the school year once a week for an hour and half. |
| 2 kids in travel soccer year-round. Plus swim team in the summer. |

9 and 12 yr olds
9 yr old - swim, gymnastics, ice skating, dance 12 yr old - swim, track in spring, volleyball in fall, gymnastics, ice skating, dance, acting. |

6&10yr old and both are doing 2 sports this season. It is very tough.
We both work out of thenhome, but have an AuPair so the kids can have doentime after achool. Total number of sports/activities a year is 5, no more than 2 running at a time for each. |

7 year old:
swim lesson 1x a week tennis lesson 1x a week soccer: 1 practice + 1 game a week I work part time and have afternoons free. |

9 year old 3rd grader:
1) heritage language on Saturdays 2) piano lessons on Mondays 3) a seasonal sport whenever. right now it's flag football. in the fall, it was fencing. Both my husband and I work full time. These lessons/sports are scheduled around our work hours. When my son was 5, he wasn't doing anything. The kindergarten teacher said kindergarten is a big adjustment and kids will be tired. Let them get used to it first, and then see what they can handle. |
