Robin Ghivan is a damn national treasure. This essay ...
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/11/30/melania-trump-made-herself-into-symbol-her-admirers-filled-it-with-meaning/ “ Over four years, the first lady has come into her own. Her place is on a pedestal where so many others have stood, oftentimes uncomfortably, often trying to make room for others. And she seems perfectly content there. Alone. Like an objet d’art. Gaze upon her. Do so without guilt, because she has actively chosen this passive, inscrutable role. But do it with discomfort and uneasiness because of the enthusiasm with which her choice has been received by some. The first lady has positioned herself as this country’s version of Marianne — the embodiment of the French republic. It’s an identity that so many other first ladies have publicly fought against. They struggled with the attention paid to their attire and to their appearance, even if they enjoyed fashion and the pleasures of dressing up. When the focus was inevitable, they used their clothing to tell a story — not about themselves, but about an industry, a place, a diplomatic urgency or America itself. Trump has not felt compelled to even put American designers first when selecting her public wardrobe. Some might argue that she was freed of that obligation when so many in the fashion industry denounced her before her husband had even taken the oath of office and glossy magazines begrudged her glowing cover stories. But does she not have an obligation, just as the president does, to be bigger than her biggest detractors? During a trip to various countries in Africa, she lamented her wish that news media “focus on what I do, not what I wear.” This was after wearing a pith helmet in Kenya. But mostly what she has done is to look very nice — or curiously ill-tempered — in pictures.” It goes on, a deserved shiv. |
I agree with you for the most part; however, because pendulous breasts can make a woman look larger than she is (particularly in the waist), they will wear a high waist to show more of an hourglass. |
I don't think it works. When it looks like you have no waist I don't see an hourglass. It's the "I have to lift up my breasts to button my jeans" look, which is terrible. |
It definitely doesn't work in this outfit, even if it can work in theory. The gold blouse looks somehow too tight, and also just the wrong fit for that skirt - which, as someone said on the politics thread, gives the appearance of a garbage bag belted up too high on the torso. Whatever else Melanie is, she's a beautiful woman with a figure she's paid a lot of money to keep looking as good as it does. She could wear better clothes. |
Would you stop with the ageism? Just because a woman is aging doesn't mean she stops looking fabulous. Women are beautiful and fabulous at every age. When assessing attractiveness, the standard should be against what one does with what one has, not what a 20 year old has. |
Even the belt is above her waist and it isn't defining anything except pendulous breasts. This could have been a winning outfit but, instead, it looks like she's wearing a stretchy skirt that she's pulled up over a pot/pregnant belly. |
I think this is the blouse Clavelly Fil Coupé Lamé Shirt DRIES VAN NOTEN Price $1,060.00 |
Unfortunately, some of us have to do that!

Amen! |
Agree. It’s a terrible look. |
I like it on the model. Maybe because it looks more insouciant. On Melanie it looks like she's being cheap/fancy. |
You are misusing the term “pendulous”. She’s definitely a bit short-waisted, as are most people with long legs. A skirt with a lower waist band would have been better. |
She looks pregnant. |
Didn’t she have some kind of kidney surgery in the last year or so? She may have sensitive scar tissue she is dealing with. |
Her top reminds me of the cheap gift wraps we had in Eastern Europe back in the 90's. |
