Two men (one Senator Ben Cardin's staffer) in the Senate chamber screwing and filming it in late 2023.

But not Caligula back then, huh?

Also good ole Barney Frank with his underage male intern among other scandals:

DP. So true. How convenient for Democrats to "forget" about these scandals.

So what—everyone should just be allowed to rape kids?

If it’s okay for Barney Frank?

Yes, Matt Gaetz is unqualified, but you wanted a DEI hire to be president.

All of Trump's picks are DEI hires

I swear we have one around here on DCUM.

The "I know you are but what am I" guy (or gal).

You just know I'm right about this.

Any Republican senators who try to obstruct President Trump’s nominees or agenda should announce their retirement from office. As we saw in the election, Trump is more popular than most Republicans in office. If they want to go against his nominees or agenda, we will go against them at the polls when they are next up for reelection.

Many of these senators aren't up for re-election until 2028 or 2030, at which point their voters won't remember what they did in early 2025. This is one of the reasons they get six-year terms.

No. They declined to pursue charges. That’s different.

But Trump doesn't have long coattails. Voters like him but this doesn't seem to extend to Republicans in the House or Senate -- they won slim majorities in each despite an extremely favorable map, especially in the Senate. In swing states, Trump won while Republicans lost Senate races in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Even in PA, the Republican is winning that seat but by the slimmest of margins while Trump won Pennsylvania fairly handily.

And you saw this in 2022 as well -- the GOP thought they'd see a red wave as the opposition party to a president with flagging popularity. They didn't.

It's honestly hard to know how to interpret this outcome if you are a more moderate Republican up for re-election in 2016. It's not obvious that Trump-backed primary challengers will prevail -- it failed in Georgia in the recent gubernatorial election.

So I'm not really sure your threat has teeth. I especially don't think it has teeth in purple states or districts where even if voters like Trump this does not necessarily mean they'll vote for down ballot candidates just because they support him. It's not clear Americans actually like Trump's agenda -- they just seem to like Trump himself, at least better than Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris.

They didn't even formally end the investigation -- it's not clear it's totally closed.

The rumor is that they decided to stop pursuing it because the witnesses against Gaetz were the kinds of unsavory characters who don't make for great witnesses at trial -- people with criminal backgrounds or compromised positions. That's because so many of the witnesses to Gaetz's behavior were drug dealers, professional escorts, and other unsavory types.

Gaetz has gone to alarming lengths to keep the ethics probe from proceeding or coming out. Even if you buy his argument that this investigation that has been led by Republicans who don't really have a lot to gain from falsely implicating a colleague in a sex trafficking ring and other unsavory behaviors, it doesn't make sense that he'd be so fearful of the report itself. Whatever is in it, Gaetz and Trump will say "fake news" and that people lied and the media is overinflating it. If the evidence against him was flimsy or hard to corroborate, this would be successful with the GOP and Fox News audience he has to win over (obviously Dems think he's guilty no matter what).

So the fact that he's gone to these lengths to keep it under wraps means there are likely some very ugly allegations in there. I suspect he quit his seat so willingly upon getting this nomination because he knew if he stayed in the House and the report was released, he'd lose his seat anyway (if he wasn't ejected from the House on the basis of the report which sounds likely).

Matt Gaetz is a bad person.

THE REPORT NEEDS TO BE RELEASED.

Why are we appointing an obnoxious frat boy who committed statutory rape and trafficked underaged girls across state lines for sex to be our top person in charge of law enforcement?

Because this what we have become as a society, Gaetz and Trump are symptoms of degradation in our society. No intellect, no knowledge, just yell and scream to get your way.

The Ethics Committee needs to release the report. There should be no "deciding whether to."
