Of course, the NAACP (assuming you mean the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and not whatever NCAAP might be) support pro-housing legislation. They have gotten royal screwed by white gentrifiers and will continue to be screwed over by Missing Middle. One of the few African American NoVa YIMBYs runs the Arlington NAACP. He is working to keep missing middle out of the few remaining African American neighborhoods like Johnson's Hill, Green Valley, Halls Hill and Highview Park. He is also advocating for actual affordable housing rental units to house the people being displaced by gentrification. A Thanksgiving tradition for decades, the Halls Hill turkey bowl team now had two residents of Halls Hill on the team. The others have been gentrified out of the community where most of them had lived for years.

In addition to Econ 101 I understand politics 101.


I am impressed by the YIMBY marketing. A bunch of white middle class libertarians have embraced trickle down theory and applied it to housing and yet have somehow branded themselves as progressives?

Don't forget it's "attainable" housing not "affordable housing." Affordable housing has to be available to the masses. Attainable housing can be any price under the sun. MoCo is in the business of making developers very happy.


Doing a basic search for a definition of affordable housing would be very helpful to you, as would a search for the definition of attainable housing.


This is just a word salad developers and urbanists use to justify their agenda to destroy the suburbs.

YIMBY policies have shown to be no more effective than NIMBY policies in promoting growth and YIMBY policies have been just as helpful to my property values as NIMBY policies, maybe even more so because your heroes the developers make my mortgage look cheap every time they put another $4,500 2BR on the market.

Nice try with the hyperbole but households >90th percentile of HHI are doing just fine on housing because that’s who the developers build for.

My plan is simplifying planning approvals, taxing land speculation to the point that it’s unprofitable, and making more low-cost financing available for MF developments so that things can get built even if they can’t promise a return >10 percent.

What’s your plan? Yelling about supply and demand as if you just learned about it? More wasteful subsidies to pump up profits?

Sure. But America doesn't need to grow HERE. There are billions of acres of baren land in the US just waiting for people to build on it Just admit it; the main reason for upzoning is to destroy the nice parts of the DMV where you can afford to live.

+1 I don't mind density. I'm from NYC. If someone wants to buy a close to metro house and knock it down and build a triplex, such is life. But the urban planning that I've seen in Maryland in terms of inadequate planning for increased traffic and school overcrowding is just making it such that they're wrecking quality of life and our kids' educational future.

DC’s Comprehensive Plan used to require that before approving projects over a certain size that DC consider the impacts on local school and infrastructure capacity. Bowser eliminated that provision when the Comp Plan was amended several years ago. Now it’s “build, baby, build!” and then DCPS and other agencies can figure out the impacts later. Bowser’s the handmaiden (there are certainly more appropriate but less polite words that fit here) of the development lobby.

The highest demand is for affordable housing, and the least-highest demand is for market-rate or luxury housing. Yet YIMBYs insist that stuffing neighborhoods with market-rate or luxury housing -- the housing with the lowest demand -- will lead to lower prices. It doesn't add up. Filtering is a myth.

For filtering to work, market-rate or luxury housing needs to be the most in-demand housing. It isn't.

America does need to grow but you can't just grow housing and nothing else. Where are all these people going to work? What's the plan for public services, like schools? You can't just split a classroom into multiple classrooms , like you can housing.
