“ High school students would be mandated to keep their cell phones silenced and away during classes, but can use their devices between classes and during lunch.”

That sounds the same as current MCPS policy. The issue is that the kids are NOT putting them away during class.

Then, what are teachers and admin going to do about it. Our principal is 100% of the problem as he makes rules and then is unwilling to enforce them and finds ways to justify not implementing them. They need to bring in some tuff principals and work with parents and teachers to get things under control.

I don't disagree with you that we have weak leadership at the principal level, but I would also ask why have we built a system that relies so much on the successful leadership of one individual? This is where we need to distribute power and responsibility because right now, things are either great or horrible, depending on how good your principal is.

Correct. As a parent you decide your child’s phone usage. Stop trying to parent other people’s kids as you don’t want to parent your own and would rather the school be the bad guy.

Parents give kids their phones because schools tell parents they have cell phone policies that limit or manage phone access. But the schools are lying because the policies aren't worth the paper printed on since there is no enforcement or because some teachers enforce it while others don't.

You can't ask parents to monitor phone use when they're not in the building with their kids.

You're responding to the person whose entire livelihood depends on the existence of cellphones. He/She couldn't function without them. Neither can her kids. They love to try and call their own insecurities "good parenting" vs all the other parents. It's sad and also, slightly insane.

You need to get off social media and stop being nasty. Maybe you are not close to your kids because of how nasty you treat people and they know they cannot ask for a ride or help. No worries, your kids come to people like me instead.

You need serious help. Full stop.

You are name calling and dictating what others do without realizing others have very different lives. Mcps has no pay phones. Some of us need to communicate pick up times and such. Your kids may not be inactivities but a good way to keep them off electronics is activities and sports. Try it. And, get off your phone.

Omg you’re the first person in history with kids who have activities! The rest of us make it work. We aren’t insane. You’re not special. Neither are your kids. I feel so bad for them actually.

I feel bad your kids are not in activities and you refuse electronics while you spend all day every day on them complaining. Bizzare.

I highly doubt your teens don’t have phone. Or, you expect them to use friends phones. If you have stable pickmuo times great, we don’t. Mcps school office is closed after hours.

Pick-up times can be communicated before or after school, when the phones are allowed. What's the problem?

Because it often chances.

Great. So text your kid about the change and they’ll see it the minute school is over. Unless you need to pick them up early, in which case you’d have to go through the main office anyway….

I’m not the one changing it. There is no way you have hs kids in mcps. Mcps offices close when school closes. So, if things run late they cannot go to the office and use the phone. There are no pay phones. And, if so, they want 60 kids going to the office calling?

MCPS posted a list. Thankfully our school is not on it. They need to provide phones for students or provide pay phones. I'd be pissed if they changed my child's pick-up time and no one let us know and I'm waiting and they don't show up.

Don't they email you if the school pick up time changes for any reason? FCPS emails and phones and texts. Otherwise, it's a you problem. Why don't you write to the school and explain to them why your DC needs an exception to the state-wide rule?

You are really an uninvolved parent. To pick up from HS, you have to go 30+ minutes early to get in the pick up line. So, I would have been in line 30-45 minutes before they see it. Either way, if they do it, I'll just send in an old unused phone for them to put in the pouch or how ever it is done.

Are you even paying attention? It's for after-school clubs and sports. So, no, the county does not email for that. If the director or coach does it they sometimes email but often it's the kids who make the changes and they don't email for that. Nor, do they email over other small changes. They tell the kids and expect the kids to tell the parents. Maybe FCPS is different and better organized. MCPS is a sh#t show.

You are crazy. My kid goes to high school and is involved in sports. If anything has changed with regard to practice schedules, either my kid or the coach contacts us and it’s usually after the school day is over.

You are so anxious that you are freaking out about the possibility of your kid having to wait for you to pick them up. They’ll be ok. I promise. When schedules change, my kid communicates and I communicate back telling him when I am able to pick him up and he just kills the time at school while waiting either doing homework or hanging out with friends.

You need to get a grip and let go of the tight leash you have on your kids.

You are lucky but how do you not get everything is different at each school. We do lots of driving so not stinting and waiting for an hour or two is helpful. Kids should be picked up promptly and not waiting around for you for staff to supervise. They want to get home. You are really inconsiderate.

Pick-up times can be communicated before or after school, when the phones are allowed. What's the problem?

Because it often chances.

Great. So text your kid about the change and they’ll see it the minute school is over. Unless you need to pick them up early, in which case you’d have to go through the main office anyway….

Who said any staff are supervising my kid afterschool? You do realize that kids can be in the school building afterschool and don’t have to be monitored by a teacher to do so, right?

You do realize that many kids hang out together after school in the building, right? Either in the library, common areas, gym, etc.

You need to unclench. You’re wound up way too tightly.

When they are in the school building after school they are supposed to be there supervised by a staff. They cannot just free roam and hang out till their parent feels like picking them up.
