Massive home addition causes confusion in Fairfax County neighborhood

It is crazy to most of the neighbors in this ‘hood that something like this somehow got approved by the county.

Maybe the family really is that out of touch that they think this is lovely or whatever. Maybe they are shocked at the uproar. Who knows?

I don’t think the neighbors, including Courtney, actually care whether or not this family talks to them again. There have been rumblings of legal proceedings, but nothing has actually happened as of yet. The neighborhood seems to have settled into wait and see on this house and then moving forward with pursuing code changes through Herrity to prevent something like this for others going forward. The homeowner and family needs to watch their step going forward, though, as any shenanigans against neighbors or wrt who is living in this monstrosity will be brought to the attention of the proper authorities.

I'm not supportive of the addition. I'm supportive of the homeowner's right to built it on his property.

I’ve read and seen everything I have been able to find, including what is on this thread.

I also am privy to the neighborhood chats, so know full well how this actually went down. Shoot, I even went online to get the Elliot in the Morning clips. My husband was out of town and getting texts from his office that he should call in because they were looking for people who have seen this thing in person.

I can guarantee you that very few in Greenbriar would support anything of the kind. We love our neighbors from all over the world. This family has been around for a while, so they aren’t a new family and/or recent immigrants. I know several of us fought back against videos that were attacking the family as “foreigners”

No one’s issue is with the family itself.

The family next door is dealing with a three story tower that looks like an apartment building being built next door to them in their single family home neighborhood. Many, many people would not be happy with that situation. It is inappropriate to threaten people for voicing their opinion and asking questions about what is legal and permitted in their own neighborhood.

You can minimize and try to infantalize the reactions of the neighbors to this construction, but their feelings are real and understandable to many. The owners building this addition could have thought this whole thing through more clearly in advance and realized that an addition that looks like a multi family apartment building would appear out of place in a single family house neighborhood. They probably could have built an addition for more space that doesn’t look like an apartment building.

I saw that the permit is on hold but I think there are lies on the application. Whomever certified that the addition "blueprints" blend in with the neighborhood should have their ass handed to them.

I don’t know how many times I have to repeat that a huge majority of the residents here are in shock that an addition like this is actually within county guidelines.

That is why changes to the county code are being pursued. There may not be much to be done with this addition, but trying to prevent this in the future for our neighborhood and all Fairfax neighborhoods seems to be the most reasonable response.
