“There's outrage in a northern Virginia neighborhood tonight, this time over a new addition being built onto a house. Some say it's way out of line, even though it meets all zoning requirements.” Did they pull permits to do this? |
| This is near where I live and I drove by one day- looks terrible. Tons of people talking about it. They did pull permits, but it's hard to tell if they are constructing according to the plan presented. If so, how could something like that get approved? Wouldnt think it meets zoning guidelines but I am not an expert. Last I heard, it was on an ordered work stop. |
| This isn't a house addition, it's an apartment building. |
|
That is horrendous. It is way too tall and close to the property line and so aesthetically ugly. How did it ever get approved?
What awful people to be so selfish to do something like that to your neighbors. |
| I am not surprised, government workers at the Fairfax County are lazy and incompetent. They need to fire the person who approved the building permit. The 3 story addition is like a high-rise rabbit hutch. The piece said that it is to house three generations of people. Who are these people? |
I looked them up on the property website. Asian sounding last name and they've apparently owned the property for years. |
| Is it just the view but in google maps photo it looks like the roof slopes toward neighbor so all the rain is going to go in that direction. |
| Part of the question about the permits was they claimed they were going to construct the property using the same slab as the previous area, which was a single car garage converted to a living room. The problem though comparing photos is that this new build extends into the driveway much closer to the street, so it appears they have poured new slab. |
| No issues - so as long as they construct per approved plans. Concerned neighbors can contact the County and confirm. It’s their property and right to add, develop PER approved plans. |

As a MoCo resident interested in doing a very small addition, I am interested in how close to the property line they are allowed to build. My setbacks are much larger.
And agree it looks hideous, but I’m also a believer that people should be able to choose what they like, as long as they follow the rules. |
Not-so-clandestine radio or fire control tower vibe. |
We do you think it’s the county’s screw up vs the contractor’s? |
| The County does not look at athletics; they are looking at zoning compliance and structure. Ugly is ok. That’s what HOA covenants are for who would have oversight in this case. Does the community have an HOA? If not, the neighbors are SOL |
| I’m Asian. While this addition may be 100% legal, just don’t agree with doing this to the neighbors (and the neighborhood in general). Really feeling sorry for that woman next door. Sadly this is where HOAs are appreciated. |
