I have a mentally ill brother. Right now we support my brother and DH brings this up every time we discuss money. It is hard enough to have a brother who suffers from mental illness. DH on top of that just makes it so much worse. |
The taxpayers. TIA. |
OP, have you tried to qualify your brother for disability? |
My brother does get disability but it is only $800 per month. That isn't enough to support him. We pay his rent, bills, insurance, etc. |
That $800 doesn't need to support him. You bought him a house and pay all of his bills. |
+1 You also give him Target and Dunkin Donuts gift cards. If he has housing and his bills paid, $800/month is plenty. |
Are you fully funding your retirement and are you on track to retire early?
Are each of your kids 529s funded? If not, I understand your husband's anger. It's possible your husband is on the front lines of your finances, crunching he numbers each month. It's likely he has a better understanding of compound interest than you. |
Ok, you have to be a troll where this is your second post on this. Your husband makes a load of money. He can apply for subsidized housing, utility assistance, food stamps, get food from the food bank, and lot of other resources. If he is getting disability and its $800, he then gets full medical through medicaid and medicare. |
The title of this thread is offensive. My sister is disabled and supports herself by holding a job. Not all disabled people - or even most - are incapable of working. |
Can he qualify for free or reduced housing cost? |
OP forgot to add that her husband already bought the brother a house. |
My mother has advanced MS, and has been fully supported for decades by my father. One of my aunts is physically and mentally handicapped, and is supported by her country of residence (not the US). One of my nephews has untreated Asperger's, anxiety and other disorders (untreated meaning no therapy, no meds and no recognition of his many struggles and needs), and has dropped out of college and lives off his father, playing video games all day. |
There is no treatment or cure for Asperger's. When kids are little they can do ABA, but generally it is not for adults. |
I am well aware of this. But certain aspects of it can be examined and talked about with a professional, particularly the social training, even for adults. And my nephew desperately needs therapy and meds for his anxiety and inability to sleep. |
Its a bit late for social training. |
