| I just found out there is a boy in my sons class who's about to turn 7!!! Wth is going on? My 7 year old is in 2nd grade. This boy is social, and outgoing so I don't see any reasons that he was kept back. I'm concerned about my younger kids starting on time barely turning 5 when 7 year olds are in their classes. |
| Missed the cut off AND redshirted? |
| Why are you concerned exactly? |
| MYOB. |
| His mama probably looked to Finland for inspiration. |
| There was a boy like this in my DS's second grade class. He was more than a head taller than my DS, and most of the other kids. From what I can tell, he didn't have any SN. I don't know why the parents redshirted that far back. I *think* it was sports related as the dad is big on athletics. |

My son had a kid in his class who turned 7 in October of K (2 months after my kid turned 5). Yes, he seemed out of place, but it really wasn't any of my business and had minimal impact on my son, who did fine as one of the youngest kids in the class.
I do think the kid in question was being set up for bigger issues down the road, and had a hard time in K even (or maybe enhanced by) being an older kid, but yeah, none of my business. |
| Shit. My son is taller than most of the kids in his current class and has a September birthday, so he misses the cutoff for Kindergarten where we live. Should I anticipate that people will talk about him like this when he starts school? |
| Yeah, there's a kid in my kid's K class who turned 7 in December. Weirdly, he didn't have a birthday party so I'm not sure whether the parents were trying to somehow disguise his age or something else. This is a well regarded private school, so the admissions office must have thought this class was the right age for the kid. My child actually really likes the 7 year old, so it doesn't affect us one way or the other. FWIW, my son just turned 6, so there's about a 15 month age difference between the kids. |
Yes. My tall son missed the cut-off by a day and people think we held him back. In fact, sometimes even when they know his birthday and the cut-off, they talk about it as if we held him back because we didn't try to get him early. It's odd, but not a big deal. |
Then this thread doesn't apply to you or your son because he wasn't redshirted; he is not going to turn 7 in K. |
| That sucks. Why would parents do that? How unfair for the kid, having to do Kindergarten work when he should be doing what all the other 7 year olds are doing. |
| It seems to me that this is more of a concern for mothers with sons, rather than daughters. God forbid that their son is amongst the shortest boys in the kindergarten class, with all these huge 7 year olds in it! Or that they can't compete in sports with all these older boys in the class. |
Yeah, OP. Does the presence of this kid some how tarnish the sheen on your shiny snowflake? |
| 7 in April or May you mean? Yes, I've heard of this. Crazy, but I've heard of it. |
