Georgetown

My kid really wants to go to Georgetown. Badly.
We are in Nova (highly ranked FCPS high school), he's a good football player, gpa 3.7. Hasn't taken SATs yet. Does he have a shot?
My concern is he has nothing else but football. There's no time for anything else--football is year round with only a few weeks off in the summer.
He will write a great essay, what else could help??

I think he has a shot. Does he test well? Good SATs/ACTs will definitely help.

Also, submit a recommendation from his coach, as well as s couple of teachers.

I went to Georgetown. A lot of the football players were in the business school for undergrad. Maybe he could find an internship during the summer before senior year in marketing/advertisement or finance? What does he do in the spring?

He usually does test well, yes.
I'm trying to think of something he can do aside from football. It really eats ALL his time. I just worry that he's got nothing else. Everyone seems to have a ton of extracurriculars!
He is going to go to Germany with school next year for spring break. I wonder if that would be a small help?

He literally does football year round. In the off season it's weight training and films rather than practice. He gets 2 weeks off total over 12 months. During the summer he has football 4-5 hours a day. But maybe he could find some kind of part time internship? That's an idea, thank you!

Maybe you as a parent need to tell your son to cut back a bit on the football so he is more well rounded.

You can't cut back "a bit" when you play for the school team, that's the schedule. I suppose I could ban him from playing football, but the experience for him has been terrific. But they are hard core about the time commitment.

And remember Georgetown REQUIRES that applicants take 3 subject tests so go sign up for those now.

Did not know that! Thank you!!

Is he being recruited for football? Because if not sports gets pretty discounted. A friend of DCs was a star football player in MoCo recruited by a big 10 program. So pretty talented. He also did indoor and outdoor track (and won events) and had some non sport ECs. I think colleges will be expecting more than football. What has he done in the summers? Work, internships? it's not to late to try new things, which would probably benefit him in other ways.

I don't believe a 3.7 will be high enough, even with an outstanding test score. Are his classes the most rigorous?

Yes, he is being recruited. By lots, but this is the one he wants the most. I'll chat with him about an internship this summer, that seems like a good idea. He'd like to work, too. Hopefully he can find some firm willing to only have him in the later afternoons-football is all morning long all summer into early afternoon.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about. He's taken a couple honors but no AP. He's done the standard 4 years of language etc. college courses.

If he's being recruited and he's good enough to play for Georgetown, don't worry about silly little things like being a "member" of some club or another -- focus on supporting him in being the best player he can be. If he doesn't like football, he'll stop doing it, but given his GPA and his ability to test well, in addition to his athleticism, I think he'll be just fine.
